I've had the car now for almost a year and I still dont think I have the audio set-up right. In my Audi I have Bose, and its like premade audio enjoyment. Its perfect for me honestly. I just dont think Im using the premium audio to its full potential. So I was wondering what people have done to set-up their system. Ive tried turning on and off the center speaker.. surround.. 3 channel.. tweaking the bass and treble.. moving the fade to the rear.. Cant get it right. I know its just a matter of setting it up right. Anyone have any suggestions? I listen to metal and hard stuff.

i had the center down 2 steps, treble is at 70 percent, and bass at 80. I kept the fade and balance centered. I have it on surround.
The true key is tweaking the equalizer settings. I did the classic "u" bend for the front EQ and focused more on mid and low frequencies for the rear EQ. I think this setting will be one I stick with. Good luck setting yours.

Re: Audio Settings for max quality (cbeerxx)

I've kinda settled on not using the ProLogic, and what's the other more-processed one, Center?. I think these distort the music & I'm thinking I like accuracy better. The CD's are 2 channel so I try to stick to that & just fiddle with the Equalizer & balance.
I listen to a wide range of instrumental (not hard stuff) and voice.
I like the post and wonder what others do...

Re: Audio Settings for max quality (cbeerxx)

I have never posted my setting before, so here they are:
Surround: Dolby Pro Logic II ON
EQ Front: 60: +2, 200: 0, 1k: 0, 3k: -2, 12k: -1
EQ Rear: 60: 0, 200: -1, 1k: 0, 3k: -1, 12k: 0
Bass: 0
Treble: -2 (for radio this would be 0)
Fader: mid
Balance: mid
Center: -1
Surround: -2
How did I end up with these settings?
Basically I start with surround totally off with fader totally in front first and adjust EQ (bass & treble first in neutral). When I'm happy with the sound, I turn fader totally back and adjust the rear EQ. Then I fine tune the sound listening different material to find bass and treble corrections. Finally I enabled the surround and found that Volvo default had the effect and mid speaker a bit too loud so I turned the mid down until the speaker did not "jump out of the dash" and adjusted the surround down so that the sound field appeared natural.
Of course these settings are compromises but they work reasonably well with many different materials like eurodance, electronic, metal, rock and pop. For radio use I would bump the treble up to neutral. I wonder why Volvo does not have separate tone settings for radio and CD...
Note: I don't have sub (yet) and my car is V50 so S40 might need some minor adjustments. Also, the front tweeters are a bit too loud as default so I had to turn them down a bit, see my front EQ adjustments.
These adjustments work well for me and allow playing quite loud too if I'm in that mood. The overall tone and sound field is neutral and that is the way I like my car audio.

Re: Audio Settings for max quality (cbeerxx)

cbeerxx, have the premium audio and just couldn't get the sound out of it either - until I forked over some additional $ for the Volvo sub. Must say it filled the gaps and like others who have it, beleive it's worth every penny. Total unit was around $770 installed. Posted the details here: http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=57519
Just IMO, for comparison to Bose, there is none. Of special beauty is the system in some Acuras that have the Bose DVD audio system with the Bose sub in the trunk - oh man. Different instrument in each speaker, incredible rich sound.
Best of luck!

Re: Audio Settings for max quality (Ride S40T)

Thanks for the opinions. Its actually very helpful to me to hear it from a person who understands Bose. I cant stress enough how much I LOVE the system in my Audi. Anyways, I probably will throw the sub into the S40. I think all of the help and input about the audio settings has me using it to its full potential now. The next best thing would be to add the sub so I can move the bass to the rear of the soundstage and free some power up in the other speakers. The help is much appreciated... and I'll probably need it again once I have the sub installed. lol
I see you hail from Scott AFB. Hmm... That is interesting what you are saying about Bose car audio. I guess I need to go to an Acura dealer to test them out just for fun. I have listened to their home theater systems and they were a disappointment. At best they were overpriced for the quality they delivered.
I know that audio quality like the ride comfort (discussed in another thread just recently) are among the most subjective matters related to autos.

Re: Audio Settings for max quality (FinnSpeed)

I think the Volvo Premium system is probably one of the better premium systems out there. The highs and mids are wonderfully detailed. However the bass is good, it does need a sub to complete. Bose systems that I have heard in Audi and Acura dont have the midrange detailed at all, you lose all of the subtle instruments, in which u can hear in the Volvo. The reason the Bose sounds so good is because it has overly bright highs, and bass that is off by 100hz. If you adjust the Volvo just right, by increasing the base up by 3, and adjusting the treble up by 1. My cousin has the premium stereo, and I have the basic, but I got the rear tweeters installed, and it sounds 10x better now.

I too am surprised that so many of your are praising Bose. I can't stand the way their home/mobile audio systems sound, and I'm not alone. I will say that 'Blose' has a very good marketing department

Re: (TheProfessor)

Bright highs and price with Bose, you bet. But like stated, it's a matter of opinion and taste, one that I've maintained for over 20 years of owning their products. If you get the chance, listen to the audio (not video) DVD system they make, just give it a spin.
Of disappointment is the "nameplate only" Bose allows to be put on many automobile dashboards with nothing really to back it up except a few underpowered speakers. Listened to them in several Mazdas, did not sound well at all, in fact, pretty bad. No offense to Mazda owners - only talking radios here and wouldn't crack on a product just because I don't prefer it. Mazda makes a good car, blast to drive, tried 4 of them.
But this thread is about our systems; VERY pleased with the Premium and hear many instruments once lost in the mundane systems of yesterday. I have no complaints, even the folks with basic systems have said they enjoy them.

Re: Audio Settings for max quality (FinnSpeed)

FinnSpeed,
I like your audio settings. They yield a nicely balanced sound. I an still experimenting starting out with your settings but shifting more of the bass away from the front and to the rear speakers; kind of using the eq as a crossover. I believe that this should reduce distortion in the vocals.
You seem to know a bit about this stuff. Do you work in the A/V field or just an enthusiast?
Stan

Re: Audio Settings for max quality (AutoGeek)

Thanks AutoGeek,
Let's say I would like to work in the A/V field but am not. I have built stereos, amplifiers and speakers since I was a bit over 10 years old. I also took some courses in acoustics besides my applied electronics studies while in college. I have designed some simple speakers and a few amplifiers myself but nowadays I'm more of an enthusiast. I prefer neutral sound and do not quite understand why someone would fill the trunk with kilowatt level subs...
Yeah, being a speaker or audio system designer would be my dream job but I have settled for the second best. I get to design precision analog + digital electronics for a mid sized company, so I have lots of control over the final product.

Re: Audio Settings for max quality (FinnSpeed)

here's a few helpful facts:
1. Premium sound has an extra speaker in front door vs rear, so the output in the front is louder b/c of lower impedance. Fix: fade to back/ adj. eq to compensate/ disconnect the extra speaker/add more resistance to the back.
2. If your system doesnt sound right, it could be the speakers. If you bump your music, be prepared to fork over for some new speakers, soon. 3 of my woofers have failed so far, (2) bad glue, pinched voice coil, (1) rattles(blown). Fix: I suggest upgrading to higher quality/wattage 6.5" woofers.(and yes, it is possible to use the old mounting brackets)

Re: Audio Settings for max quality (FinnSpeed)

FinnSpeed
You sound like me. I have played with this stuff since I was a kid. Even built a few sets of speakers. One of these days I want to design and build a nice high quality set. I have an EE degree an love to apply that knowledge. The closest I've gotten to an A/V career is that I volunteer as an A/V tech at my church.
Most of the other A/V guys at church do it professionally. It sounds like a lot of strange hours. One of the guys used design speakers for Polk Audio. Kind of interesting to get the inside scoop.
Any yes, natural sound is my goal!
Stan
