Geneva, Switzerland -- The new Audi allroad quattro 4.2 has a power output of 220 kW (300 bhp), the fascinating flair of an eight-cylinder model and much more, too.
The peak-torque range of the V8 is as impressive as its maximum power output. It achieves a constant 380 Nm between 2700 and 4600 rpm. The allroad quattro 4.2 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds. It reaches a top speed of 240 km/h.
The short overall length of the eight-cylinder unit is the result of a new engine concept. The toothed belt on the engine's front end has been replaced by a chain drive to its rear. Two electric cooler fans take the place of the large viscous fan at the front of the vehicle. This compact design is beneficial for the distribution of axle loads and enhances the car's all-terrain abilities. The new Motronic ME 7.1.1 integrates the allroad quattro 4.2's power take-offs into the engine management concept on a torque basis. A two-stage variable intake manifold made from magnesium guarantees maximum engine output higher up the speed range and ample low-end torque. Continuous camshaft control also contributes towards impressive dynamism across an extremely wide range of engine speeds.
The standard-fit 5-speed tiptronic with Sport program adapts to suit the driver's style. The steering wheel with gearshift control means that the driver can change directly between the automatic mode and manual gear selection at the push of a button.
Permanent four-wheel drive with variable distribution of the drive power by means of a Torsen interaxle differential ensures supreme forward propulsion. The further improved 4-level air suspension with new functions adapts to the different requirements of on-road and off-road use.
The standard equipment of the Audi allroad quattro 4.2, which will be available from summer 2002, includes the Audi Sideguard head-level airbag system, electrically adjustable seats with Cricket leather upholstery, front centre armrest, leather-covered steering wheel, Walnut inlays, Driver Information System DIS, 7.5 x 18 alloy wheels, xenon headlights and anti-theft alarm.

I don't know why Audi never built this in the first place. I wonder how it'll hold up with American pulling large boats?
