I have logged 2800 miles, but have not had an oil change in my 2008 v70. I was thinking of taking the car in for first service at 3000, or 3500 miles. Any opinions when the first oil change should be performed.<p>There have been popular opinions that it should occur at first 1000 miles since engine is new to remove any metal from engine production. Volvo I believe recommends 7500 miles. BMW at 15,000 miles.

Re: At what mileage did you do first oil change? (Lunchman)

I had my first oil change at 5000klms, do what you feel comfortable with ( finances permiting), I have never heard of an engine failing due to too many oil changes. I have a V70 AWD T6 & have the oil changed every 15000klms max, maybe over the top but i do approx 40-50,000klms p.a. & have never had any engine problems.

Many different opinions on this matter but most agree that 7500 miles doesn't make much sense; especially on the first fill. IMO, change it in the range you mentioned and go back at 7500 miles for the next one.

So you are suggesting then to do the first one in that much shorter interval due to the possible presence of "break-in" metal shavings and other possible abrasives? I'd heard this was a concern at one time with many American cars, but now just an urban legend with upscale vehicles.<p>Many suggest it's just a waste now to be so aggressive with that first change, due to improved machining and superior quality control.<p><TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD><i>Quote, originally posted by <b>MagoonR</b> »</i></TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Many different opinions on this matter but most agree that 7500 miles doesn't make much sense; especially on the first fill. Re: At what mileage did you do first oil change? (MagoonR)

Thank you Magoon..... appreciate the clarification. <p>Mine is no turbo but I would like to hang onto the car for a while; right now I'm at about 4500 so maybe I'll pick up some synthetic oil and have them do it at 5K. <p>Had an interesting conversation with one of the local dealership service managers yesterday. I brought up the issue of syhth vs. "regular oil." He was fairly split and didn't really lean one way or another. He did comment that if I were planning on keeping it for a while and hadn't done an oil change yet, starting synthetic right now would be the way to go, as opposed to switching it to it later at say, 50K. <p>Although he did not explain, he implied that such a switch, into the engines life could cause some problems down the road.<p><TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD><i>Quote, originally posted by <b>MagoonR</b> »</i></TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote"><p>If you're planning to keep the car, that is what I am suggesting. I had mine changed at about 7200 miles (approaching the 7500 interval). No probs. I used the Castrol which the dealership had and did not pay up for Mobil 1. Accordingly I'm planning on the next one as I approach 15000 mi with the same Castrol oil.<p>Excellent car, not one problem so far <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://********************/smile/emthup.gif" BORDER="0">

I stopped at the local auto parts store to price Mobil1. The 5W-30 is going for $6.99/qt. Inquired but they typically don't put it on sale and the bulk rate did not gain any additional savings. I still have a little time to shop around prior to the first change.

Re: (MagoonR)

Never occurred to me to buy in bulk size like that - and basically you're getting close to 2 qts. free that way. That's the 5W-30?<p><TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD><i>Quote, originally posted by <b>MagoonR</b> »</i></TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote"><p>I buy the 5qt jugs at Wal Mart for around $25.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Actually, my experience with the last few cars I've owned is that oil changes at the manuf. recomended interval is all I've needed to get about 150,000 miles or 10 years out of a car--at which point they were still running well, but I sold and bought new ones. Perhaps I'm lucky, but I've begun to think that changing oil every 3000 is probably a concept being propogated by the Jiffy Lube's of the world. I have no data to support so don't ask. But I may have my oil analyzed the next time and see how it held up.

I've never owned anything with a turbo, and know little about them. Are they typically more demanding on oil?<p><TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD><i>Quote, originally posted by <b>MagoonR</b> »</i></TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote"><p>Were any of these cars a turbo?</TD></TR></TABLE>

My research tells me that as cars get older, more frequent changes may help (I've been told as cars age there is increased liklihood for gas to seep past the rings into the oil which can cause faster oil breakdown). But the ultimate proof is having my oil analyzed after 7500 miles and seeing if it has or has not broken down. I also remember other threads on this site where the topic was also debated. I'd have to look for them. And the conclusion I came away with was that the manuf. recommended was probably good enough. But I'm a hard data guy. I'll let that lead me to a conclusion. So if you or anyone have data on the current T6 engine and oil breakdown, please share. Thanks.

I have done a few Blackstone tests and they have shown breakdown consistent with more miles than the interval........but I do a fair amount of the 5-10 mile trips which is hard on even synthetic oil.

IIRC, both tests showed acceptable results but were more indicative of a 5000-5500 mile average sample result. Therefore, 5000 miles of my driving (using synthetic) would be equivalent to general wear of a 7500 mile oil change......but I stick with splitting the intervals as noted. YMMV.

Stopped at SAM's Club this evening for a price check on the Mobil 1 5W 30. They only sell the quarts in a six-pack, at $5.88/QT. Next check will be the local WalMart to see what they have to offer, per Magoon's earlier suggestion <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/biggrin.gif" BORDER="0"> .
