So I brought the 04 GT in the other day for a humming noise coming from the left front. It took a while for the tech to actually hear it (about 20 mins of driving on a smooth road before I could convince him that it wasn't tire noise). Anyway, they finally deduced it was the hub (probably the wheel bearing and to save time they just replaced the hub, since I don't believe the hub has anything that would make noise besides the bearings). So, that took about 3 days before they could get the part in - no problems.

Well, the same day that I took the tech out for the spin, during reverse/drive shift, the car made a pretty loud clunk. Now, I'm familiar with the forward/reverse clunk from the brakes, but this came from somewhere in the middle of the car. The tech said to note that noise down so that they can take a look at it. Long story short, his first inclination was to re-torque the engine mounts (upper/lower) to spec and that should "solve the issue." I get a call yesterday and they said that post-torque the noise is actually louder, and they are still trying to figure out where the noise is coming from.

Any forum members care to provide insight that I can share with the tech? I've had the XC90 bolts put in as well to minimize the axle ping. Also saw an old post suggesting it was a tranny issue?

Luckily all of this is under VIP! http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

When I was getting the D to R clunk they tried replacing both axles with no luck, then moved on to replacing both hubs, which fixed the issue.

Re: (Husker Z)

Just a quick update.

The SA called and said that they replaced the one side hub and that looked fine now. However, the "clunk" noise is coming from the bevel gear - I'll assume that to be the angle gear problem that everyone has posted about on SS. He said the Volvo regional rep will be coming by tomorrow to "check out and approve" the claim - the claim is expected to be around $2300. Seems low for an angle gear replacement and a hub, no?

I'm having a similar issue with our 07 MT. Had the angle gear replaced a few months ago and Volvo wants the dealer to change it again.

That's exactly what mine cost (except I didn't need a hub). Does your clunk happen all the time, or only occasionally?
