Yup, it's my turn now

I know our S40's are much admired for their looks, sadly a '97 Pathfinder found my car's rear too much of a temptation and performed an unnatural act on it.

The initial word is: Trunk lid, tail lights, bumper (duh!) rear floorpan and probably some rear suspension work.

I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions on how and what to test or examine after the work is done. In particular, since the anti whiplash doo-dad in the seat kicked in, do I need to check to make sure the seat is still as it should be?

I can post pic's as soon as I figure out how too ... !

Yes, absolutely. But it's probably not a check you can do yourself; you'll likely have to have your dealer inspect the seats. I would certainly have this done up-front, before any repair work starts, so that you/the Pathfinder owner/the insurance company know at the beginning what the repair bill is going to be.

Good suggestion, thanks. Fortunately, the other insurance company has said they are accepting full liability (probably because I was travelling at zero miles per hour) and told me that I can have the work done wherever I chose (we'll see how that holds up as the cost mounts).

I had a tour of he main UAG body shop which put me somwehat at ease. The place was full of Porsches (the majority of vehicles), BMWs, Audi's, Jaguars and a few RR's. They claim they have the only Audi and Jaguar techs for seven states certified to work on Aluminum frames, but I have to think that doesn't include CA.

the wips seat has all kind of flexible stuff in there, I think you have to just change it in just about ANY accident. Since the frame is internal there is now way they can "inspect" it.

A quick look at Arizona law suggests that they cannot require you to have the work done at a particular shop, so it's up to you. Apparently what they can do, however, is designate a "preferred" shop, and work from their estimate. So if you go someplace other than the preferred shop, and your choice of shop estimates the work to cost more than the preferred shop did, you may be liable for the balance.

Sorry about the damage, jpm. I had some work done on my S40 here in Tucson. My insurance company (allstate), cut me a check for the estimated cost of the repair, said I can take it to any shop I wanted (so I asked my dealer for the BEST shop in town), and the insurance also said to me that if there is any extra charges over and above the estimate, then the shop deals directly with them about it.

Following the repairs, I went in...handed over my check and assumed that if there were any other charges, they were already dealt with. I would definitely ask the dealers advice on a good body shop. Since the one I used deals closely with my dealer, I was sure that I was getting the correct repairs done.

btw...are you enjoying the 100 degree weather yet? It sure is getting nice and warm a little further south.

Spitfire - I'm with Allstate as well ... I liked the ability to pay an extra $28 a year and have a brand new vehicle if mine gets totalled in the first three years. The "at fault" accident forgiveness deal is nice too, though I hope to never invoke that.

My car is at the UAG body shop for their luxury brands in south Scottsdale - owned by the dealership group (UAG) I bought the car from.

The other driver's insurance is Progressive and so far they've been easy to deal with ... fingers crossed. I also appreciate them not cheaping out on my rental - a Chrysler 300 - with seats that don't aggravate my back pain.

Rich - I was on I17 southbound @ Peoria Ave. Stopped in traffic. Glanced in my mirror to see smoking tires and then WHAMMO!!!

Ironically, the DPS officer told me they'd only just finished clearing another accident a couple of yards ahead. Later in the day on my way for X-rays, there was yet another accident within a few yards of the same spot. Maybe the keebler elves were making mischief in that spot on Wednesday!
