My brand new windshield is cracked. This is not some little hairline crack...its about 4-5 inches long and basically looks shattered an inch around it. It's right at the bottom edge of the window, in the blacked out area. The cause...I HAVE NO IDEA. No evidence at all. I noticed it when I got home...maybe vandalism?
Calling any dealers out there...or those with prices for a new windshield. Please respond if you can give me a ballpark estimate for a new windshield. I'm beyond pissed right now...

If there is no sign of impact, it could be that the windshield was defectively mounted or just defective. Try to warranty it if you can.
If it's cracked by impact, you probqably should check your insurance.

I really don't have the slightest clue how much it'll cost, but my wild guess is between $300-400. But I could be way off and it's over 1K. If I am right, obviously I wouldn't go through insurance. My dealer opens in 2 hours so I'm gonna give a call then.
Also, stupid question. If I do go insurance on something like this, do I get a written estimate from the dealer prior to filing a claim, or do a file a claim first?
Not knowing why this happened is what annoys me the most. Well that $400 range is what I expected. So I'm guessing if that's what the dealer quotes me, I'll pay out of pocket instead of going through insurance and paying a $500 deductible. Is there really any way this could be covered under warranty?
Here's another pic from the front/top.

Wowie, I wouldn't even call this a 'crack'. This looks like some serious impact damage. I would guess it was vandalism. A defective windshield would never crack like that IMHO.
Raptor

Re: ARGGH!!! Windshield Cracked! (Raptor)

I called my dealer. They want $325 for the glass and $195 for installation. I spoke to my service advisor and explained the situation. It then came up (can't believe it didn't strike me as odd before this) that I had my wiper motor replaced two weeks ago. There's a chance it was cracked/weakened when this was done. Also, I explained how my wiper sweep extends over the windshield on the drivers side, which may have caused undue stress on the glass.
Well, he couldn't say for sure if it would be covered under warranty without taking a look...so I'll be swinging by there later today.
As for the insurance deductible. Turns out that my comprehensive may only be $250 (not $500 which is my collision). Either way, the dealer said they will deal with the insurance company on the claim.
I'll update later today.

I have always had full glass coverage. When my car got broken into once I called the insurance company and they have a separate phone number for glass claims. I just made sure it was OEM glass.

I just wanted to give a quick update on this.
After getting quotes in the $400-$500 range from independent glass installers, I brought the car to my dealer last week to take a look. My service advisor wasn't there that day but another rep gave me a quote of $550 installed. He said it didn't look like a defective windshield, but he didn't have the authority to make the call. Nevertheless I told him to place the order and I was scheduled to bring the car in this past tuesday. I dropped the car of in the morning, this time my advisor was there so I explained the situation. No rocks involved, no obvious vandalism, etc. He told me he would talk to the head of the service department and get back to me.
Two hours later...I get a call from my advisor. "Volvo has inspected the winshield and has determined it is defective. We're going to take care of it for you." WoW! I was very impressed it was openly admited to like that. To make a long story short, I picked up my car today...new windshield and all. At a final cost of "WARRANTY"
I just wanted to let anyone out there who is thinking about Volvo in their future, that they can feel comfortable knowing customer service IS a priority, as is doing the right thing. I have owned other luxury vehicles in the past and was hesitant of the Volvo name and how it translated to customer appreciation. Although I am not thrilled that my 3 month old S40 has been in the shop for over 140 hours, they definitely made right by me.
I think it is worth mentioning the dealer name...Bridgewater Volvo in Bridgewater, NJ. If anyone is in the area, I highly recommend them for their utmost professionalism and care for their customers.
Ominx.
....Now I can get back to posting pictures of my HIDs

That's great news Ominx!
I only wished the service of Volvo here in the Phils is as good as what you have described.
I'll continue to keep an open mind about it but am not holding my hopes up based on my first two encounters with them (first is during the car's release and last was during the first check).

Re: ARGGH!!! Windshield Cracked! (S40 T5)

Sorry to hear Volvo service isn't universally customer oriented. I think it really is important for them to achieve that level where all dealers are equally focused on customer satisfaction and appreciation.
...not to rub it in, but I didn't even tell half of the details. My service advisor stated that it is the service department's goal to return most cars with routine repairs to customers within 24-36 hours. Now, I brought my car in Tuesday morning at 7 am, with the understanding it would be finished at the end of the day or at the latest, 7 am Wednesday morning. It was not. It was finished until 6 pm Wed., after closing so I had to pick the car up on Thurs. That was a problem for me as I had no way to pick it up.
You wouldn't believe what they offered. They said, because of the inconvinience, they would transport the car to my job, a little over an hour away from the dealer. I couldn't believe it. While I sincerely appreciated the offer, I declined and had my wife pick it up. But still...I was impressed.
Again...from what I hear, this is not the norm. I hope other dealers will eventually step up to the plate in this regard and prove the validity of the Volvo name.
Ominx.
