Are the two types of Stainless side trim interchangeable?

1138 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  VolvoBob
My 1968 has the narrow stainless w/ the rubber bumper built into it. I really like the wider one that is doesn't have the rubber. Are the mounting locations the same? Hope it's a simple swap. You can tell I'm now back on the restoration trail!

Thanks,
Jason

Jason:

That side molding is not a stock item but an aftermarket sold by IPD and others. The stock stuff is the wide stainless steel pieces. Probably replaced them because of dents,

No, '67 onwards have the narrow, straight trim from the factory. Switching to the older style is not a direct swap -- holes don't match, and the swoop on the door is not compatible with the later door handle.

I'm with ya Phil but not talking about the before 67 ones that swoop up by the door handles. I've seen three types on 67 and up.
One, nothing at all
Two, the cheesy utilitarian thin strip w/ rubber (mine)
Three the wider stainless strip that I'm wanting to do but not sure how much trouble it will be.

The only trouble I've seen so far is the cost for buying the strips!!! appox $80-90 each and there are 6 of them!!!! That is certainly trouble for the ole' wallet BUT it is the only way to go in my humble opinion.

Oh, I see... didn't read your original question carefully enough, sorry.

I assume the original holes are still there under the aftermarket trim, so you should have no trouble going back to stock. New mounting clips are available, as well as a better alternative you can use in many locations.

Phil's right about the holes. I had put the ones with the rubber on my '66 thinking it would protect the car
from dings. Well they are so narrow and thing they really didn't. The only positive thing was they didn't dent like the stainless steel ones.

Those strips on your car are held on by small sheetmetal screws under that rubber strip. That rubber is just snaped in place and when warm pull out easily.
