Hi All,
I'm new to this forum as I just purchased a 2006 S60. I'm trying to replace the HU-650 radio with a Kenwood navigation system (DNX7140). I was wondering if anyone knows where I can access the speed sensor information for the dead reckoning in the navigation?
Thanks in advance,
Don

Re: Anyone know where I can access the VSS in a 2006 S60 2.5T? (ufd108)

Don, the only way to get it is if you have a CAN BUS reader. If you are planing on using the Dietz adapter with your radio, it does have the speed output line. Basically the unit reads the volvo CAN BUS and converts the speed signal to a standard format that can be read by the nav unit. I used the speed output from a Deitz 61301 CAN BUS reader with my Alpine nav and it worked fine.
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=55892
They have a wireharness that supports the reomte options on kenwood head units (enables steering wheel control in Volvo S60/S80/V70).
61301 info is here http://www.dietz2.biz/artikeld...00000
61007 and 61009 info is here http://www.dietz2.biz/artikeld...00000
http://www.dietz2.biz/artikeld...00000
Perzan Auto Radio in Upper Darby, PA apparently is the only US retailer:
(610) 734-1234
6409 Market St
Upper Darby, PA 19082
Modified by ss60 at 7:51 PM 5-6-2009

Re: Anyone know where I can access the VSS in a 2006 S60 2.5T? (ss60)

Hi ss60,
Thank you very much for the information. I just ordered from Perzan, although the new module is the 61303, and they don't make the Volvo harness anymore, so it has to be spliced in. That worries me a little, as CAN is a terminated bus and improper splicing can cause problems. We'll see.
Thanks again for the quick response. I posted the question on another Volvo board a week ago (before I found SwedeSpeed) and didn't get a single response.
Don

There must be a place in the UK or somewhere that still has a leftover harness in stock.
But if not... there are female couplers available on ebay that will fit the Volvo stock couplers in the car (the green and grey rectangular male connectors).
here is the metra one
http://cgi.ebay.com/METRA-70-9...%3A50

Another source of adapters:
http://www.sonicelectronix.com....html
Soundgate CANMULTI, CANPULSE5 ($$$)
Any adapter for the Ford Focus C-MAX should work--albeit with another connector or bare wires--and they are much cheaper, but there apparently is no source in North America. I wonder if any of the other Ford adapters will work, i.e. are any of the late model US Fords compatible?

Re: Anyone know where I can access the VSS in a 2006 S60 2.5T? (MrTippy)

Hi ss60,
I have those adapters to put the Kenwood HU in. Problem is they don't have the CAN bus in these connectors. My S60 has the base HU-650 radio which doesn't use CAN, unless the information that came with the wiring harness is wrong. I also looked at the Volvo wiring diagrams and the 650 HU doesn't have a CAN connection to it. Now, I realize that probably doesn't make sense, since a CAN connection must be used for the steering wheel controls, so I must be missing something. Maybe there is another connector besides the 2 that came in my harness kit (I actually have a Scosche kit, not the Metra, but according to the Metra site their kit also only has 12V constant, 12V switched, antenna power, remote turn-on, ground, and speaker connections; no CAN wires).
I am an electrical engineer, so I can read wiring diagrams and I know all about CAN and LIN, but I'm only 2 weeks into being a Volvo owner, so please excuse my ignorance.
And I really do appreciate all the help from this forum.
Thanks again,
Don

Re: Anyone know where I can access the VSS in a 2006 S60 2.5T? (ufd108)

Hi again,
Looking at the wiring diagrams more closely I think the factory harness contains the CAN bus signals but the aftermarket adapters don't populate those pins because no aftermarket head unit would connect directly to the CAN bus. Now, I could buy a second adapter to cannibalize the extra pins and wires to tap into the Dietz box. Does anyone know where I can get a pin removal tool for those connectors, or it they can be removed with normal tools like small screwdrivers?
Thank you,
Don

Don, the CAN signal wires are in the green harness. I'll see if I can find the install manual I had from the Deitz, it had all the pin outs on it.
These are the 5 wires on the Deitz harmess - process of elimination could find it pretty quick if I can't find that manual. (looks like I had a loose white wire there, yipes! )

according to Jim Lill in this thread A7 is CAN high and A8 is CAN low. Just wanted to thank everyone for their help on this project. The Kenwood is installed with the Dietz module and it works great. I'll post a picture as soon as I get a chance.
Again, thanks very much to all.

I had a Pioneer AVIC-Z1 in my old car and couldn't wait to get the Kenwood after that experience.
Pros:
- Garmin navigation
- great iPod integration
- bluetooth (by Parrott) actually works
- Kenwood audio
Cons:
- Garmin navigation
- interface (may just be I need to get used to it after 3 years of the Pioneer)
I put Garmin as both a pro and a con because I haven't used Garmin in several years and they seem to have gone down hill since then. I still think Garmin is the best out there but sometimes its routing is funky. They used to have a lot more control built in but they seem to have removed much of it.
Either you like Garmin or you don't.
iPod is 5 - 10 light years better than Pioneer. So is Sirius support if that is important to you. Parrott bluetooth actually works, which is more than you can say about the piece of trash Pioneer sells for their units.
Overall, very glad I bought it so far.
Hope this helps,
Don

Thanks Don, that helps a lot actually. I am used to Garmin (have a GVN-53 headless unit in my car) so that part is great, nothing like consistency between the two cars.
Glad to here that the ipod control is good also. Some of the 1st gen ipod stuff was very poor indeed.
