I'm about to go with my daughter to buy her first new car, a 2007 S60 2.5T. But we're confused about what I've found out about the Premium Package and the availability of Leather Seats as well as the "Power Glass Moonroof". I'm hoping someone on this forum knows some "inside" info that can clear up our confusion.
Here is what I've heard, from various sources, about the Sunroof.
1) There are two versions of the S60 2.5T. One has a sunroof, and its code is 384-59-32-291, whereas the other does not have a sunroof, and its code is 384-59-32-191 [emphasis is on the bolded, third from the last, digit, 2 vs. 1]. The price difference is about $1,200.
2) There is a Premium Package ("AG") that is supposed to include the sunroof, for about ~$2,600.
If she gets the "sunroof model" (...-291) and the Premium Pkg., she would be paying twice for the sunroof, once to get the car with the sunroof, and then again to get the option package to get the sunroof; or in other words, $3,800 for a sunroof.
Anyone know if she can either order the cheaper car (...-191) and get the sunroof with the Premium Pkg, or else order the more expensive car with the sunroof and, although not getting the Premium Pkg., still have a sunroof?
Here is what else I've heard concerning Leather Seats. While the Premium Pkg. (AG) includes Leather Seats, there is also a option code (99xx) for Leather Seats separate from the Premium Pkg that's half the cost of the Premium Pkg. Can Leather Seats be ordered without the Premium Pkg.?
Thanks.

The Volvo sales pro's will be here shortly.
Meanwhile you can build your daughter's car here...
http://www.volvocars.us/
My direction would be to buy the EXACT car she desires even if you pay a premium price.
Enjoy that new Volvo!
George Dill

Ken, what about a 2006 I'm sure you'll be able to get a great deal on one. It does not look like the MSRP for what your looking for in a '07 will be more than my '06 at $ 35,200.

Re: (FrenchCamp49er)

Thanks, but remembering that this is for my daughter (and only child), the DSTC option is a non-negotiable deal-breaker. This was only an option (and I've been told, a rare one in dealers' remaining '06 inventories), but it is standard equipment in all the '07 cars.
And as for her option picks (and I like her taste), she wants a "light over light" color combo, like Metallic Silver with Light Sand (or Taupe) interior -- and it seems that almost every dealer inventory we've looked at on the web (for the '07 cars) have dealers picking (what few silver cars they order for "stock") black (or other dark) interior. You wouldn't believe how many "dark over dark" cars are in inventories.
Don't people order light-colored cars anymore?!
There are other things as well that might not be in ordinary inventory, such as the Active Bi-Xenon headlights (they're gone "active" -- i.e., turning -- for '07), full Convenience Package, and Interior Air Quality System.
Clearly, we probably going to have to order her car, rather than find it in existing inventory.
re: "...My direction would be to buy the EXACT car she desires even if you pay a premium price...."
That's exactly the way I feel, too. She's going to (hopefully) have this car a long time, and I don't want her to regret getting it exactly the way she wants it. The cost of an option, when prorated over years, isn't as scary as it seems in the initial outlay.
But on the other hand, I can't see her having to pay for a sunroof twice over what it could cost another way. It seems that the salesman may have three different ways to include a sunroof and leather seats:
1) Cheaper Car (191) with Premium Pkg.
2) More expensive Car (291) with Premium Pkg. -- this is the most expensive alternative.
3) More expensive Car (291) without Premium Pkg, but with the Leather seats option.
Thanks.

And, no, you would not be paying twice for a sunroof if you choose the Premium package.
Finally, you can orer leathe seats without the Premium package but you will have a 2.5T model without a sunroof. Goodluck in trying to sell it when it the time comes (or trade it for a good value).
Yannis

Seems to me, the Premium Pkg should be $1,200 cheaper in the 291 car than in the 191 car.

Thank you for replying, re: "...A car without the Premium package but with Sunroof (meaning no leather) will have a pretty horrific resale value.... a 2.5T model without a sunroof. Goodluck in trying to sell it when it the time comes...."
I assure you that she wants the car with *both* the sunroof and the leather seats -- having either one without the other is *not* an acceptable option.

But you wrote that it is cheaper to order the Premium package? This is what seems confusing....
When I look at the figures I have, it makes no sense -- unless my dollar amounts (representing "dealer cost", which is what the dealer should offer) are not valid.
[The Premium package, besides the sunroof and leather, adds nothing important, just wood inlays, rear hatshelf speakers and a power passenger seat. These are not worth $1,200, IMHO. So we're just considering the leather seats and sunroof. Also, the Leather-only option is $1,203, and the difference between the 191 and 291 cars is $1,200.]
In summary, the Premium Package should have one price (e.g., $2,575) as applied to the 191 car in order to add the sunroof (because the 191 car initially doesn't have a sunroof); but it should have a $1,200 lower price ($1,375) as applied to the 291 car, because the 291 already has the sunroof (and costs $1,200 more because of it). E.g., consider these three cars:
191 car (w/o sunroof) + Premium pkg (to add sunroof and leather, etc.): $0 + $2,575 = $2,575.
291 car (w/ sunroof) + Premium Pkg (to add just leather, since the 291 car already has a sunroof): $1,200 + $2,575 = $3,775
291 car (w/ sunroof) + Leather option, but w/o the Premium Pkg: $1,200 + $1,203 = $2,403
Since all three cars (as configured above) have a sunroof and leather seats, notice that one of these three alternatives costs approx. $1,200 to $1,300 more than the other two. Why? I can only surmise that it is to add the passenger's power seat and rear shelf speakers and wood trim.
Or in other words, why should the Premium Pkg (which is supposed to include the sunroof) cost the same in both cars, one without, and the other already having, a sunroof? It seems to me that you would be paying twice for that sunroof in that second configuration -- once by upgrading from a 191 to a 291 car, and second by adding the full price of the Premium Pkg.
I hope that you can see why I am bewildered by this price scheme.
Thanks for all replies -- they are all welcomed.

KenC-
First you need to forget all about 191 and 291 (this must be confusing you)
all you need to worry about is do you ,or your daughter, want sunroof and leather purchased individually for about $2400 or the Premium package, which includes those and will also get you the rear hatshelf speakers(worth it,otherwise you have only 4 speakers) wood inlays(looks better than the black plastic you will get instead) and a power pass. seat (nice to have and will help resale) for $2575. $175 dollar difference that you will help resale in the end. I commend you for looking at everything available today to make sure you get a good deal, but I really think you're thinking to much here. Summary- get the gosh darn Premium package.
Fred

Yes, indeed, the two different cars (191 and 291) were the crux of the confusion.
And we probably will have to get the Premium package -- we're going to the dealer tomorrow to see what we can get.
Thanks, to you and the rest of you for helping out.
Regards,
Thanks to everyone -- we got it all straightened out at the dealer ....

We went to the dealer today and sat down with a great salesman -- he explained it all and we got a very good price (based on what I learned from internet sources for the dollar amounts) -- it didn't seem like he even tried to make an unfair profit. I guess it's a buyers market, and he wanted our business. Plus, she'll get a VCOA bonus, too (I made sure to buy her a membership as soon as the program was started).
We also took it for a good test drive -- salesman handed us the keys, and we went off for about a 30 mile drive (hope he wasn't worrying until we got back ;-), highways and all! She's very happy with how it felt.
And we did get the Premium Pkg, along with some other goodies (Active BiXenons, Convenience and Climate, etc.) as well as the color combo my daughter liked best. Only trouble is that she'll have to wait about a month -- had to order it -- dealers tastes (for their stock) differed from hers for the colors, and few ordered the BiXenons. He's part of a group of three dealerships, but a suitable one wasn't to be found (in them, or elsewhere), so she'll wait. This is her first new car, and we agree that she should be happy with what she got!
Anyway, thanks to you all for your comments.
