So the wife is on a clover leaf, about to merge onto the freeway and the sunroof explodes, glass everywhere and scares the crap outta my wife. Dealer says it was "struck" (which seems odd because the glass actually looks like it blew upwards). Anyway, dealer isn't covering it under warranty (I find it hard to believe a rock or something hit it).
Anyway, the dealer has been pretty good about it. I was a little on the defensive side at first because I was afraid they were going to fix it without giving us a price or calling us or anything, (i'm not independantly wealthy afterall). But they gave me a quote to fix it. They are actually willing to pull glass out of the showroom car to fix it (otherwise it's a week for the glass to come in).
anyway, looks like it's going to be about 1200 bucks, which really sucks but whadya do. Maybe I can still get it covered.

Re: Anyone have their sunroof glass explode? (TFS)

Yes, this has happened to at least one forum member previously. He was able to get Volvo (Canada) to cover the replacement.

Man, I'm so affraid this is going to happen to me one of these days. On warm days when I get in the car and drive away, my moon roof pops. Having read the exploding moon roof post in the past, I get ready for the shatering glass every time I hear the popping noise.

I think I'm gonna start closing my sunshade from now on 1200 bucks for a new sunroof seems a little steep, definitely talk them into covering it ,and print out the other exploding sunroof thread and show them.
Holy poop. I've been hearing this "knock" sound coming from up and behind
my right ear when I'm driving. Could this be my moonroof expanding / contracting
due to heat/sunlight??!

So, this isn't going so well. The Service manager seems to really think that something hit it and has told that to Volvo Canada so they won't do anything yet. I've asked to speak to the supervisor. I'm not trying to be a jerk here, and i'm not trying to rip anybody off, just seems like double standard, why do they replace some and not others.
Also, doing a yahoo search I found several xc70's, xc90's etc that have had almost the same thing happen. Also, I found a news article from a Carwash website (there really is a forum for everything) that states that the Car wash owners should recommend to owners of Volvo cars to close their sun shields while going through the car wash to prevent the glass from getting in in the event of a failure . Also, Volvo is covering these occurances under warranty. The longer this process takes the more I seem to dig up.
The Service manager has been nice about it honestly but I think he figures i'm being unreasonable due to the fact he's confident it was hit. But i'm even MORE confident it WASN'T hit due to all the occurances of this phenomena, not to mention where and when it happened. I wish I could have met the service department under better circumstances as there is not much of a relationship at this point (haven't even had my first service visit yet).
BTW, here's the article for those interested:
http://www.carwash.com/News.asp?mode=4&N_ID=31426

Modified by TFS at 2:26 PM 6-15-2006

Re: (TFS)

Just one more reason why I hate sunroofs.... but that is not what I want to add here. On my Scion tC and my Acura GS-R both came ONLY with sunroofs, breaking on the highway was common (reported to the forum). the glass is under stress and any small bits of junk can easily start a crack that will just shatter the glass.

Re: (Oldman)

The driver's door window in My Ford pickup shattered one Friday night in January when I touched the window DOWN buttom to lower the window to brush a bit of snow off the mirror. As soon as I touched the button I was sitting in a pile of broken glass. I thought I had been shot! Glass shop said the glass froze to the weather stripping and the windows in that truck are stong.... It was a long chilly ride home that night..... 70 miles in 20 deg. temps.... But the truck has a GREAT heater so it wasn't unbearable...

Re: Anyone have their sunroof glass explode? (mullmann)

The $1200 is for the whole sunroof mechanism not just the glass. The glass is sealed to the tilt/slide frame. had a piece break on my 850 dealer wanted $1300 for it.
Headliner need to come out, easier done on a wagon, 8 nuts and 1 wire connector then the unit comes out, new one goes in, add shims to adjust glass and your ready to go, about 2hrs to do the 850.
I've had a 1.5" rock hit my windshield on the highway actually gouging out some glass but no crack at all, same glass pits badly from sand kernels?
My Dodge Dakota rear slider glass has been replaced twice due to something hitting the plastic trim not the glass! it spiderwebs then falls in.
In your case something might have hit the glass unknowingly and prestressed it. When going though the onramp turn the body flexed enough to put the needed pressure on the glass and cause it to fail. The sunroof glass is curved slightly which doesn't help, same principal as water tension and waterskimmers, break the tension and the bug sinks.

Re: (Jazz2)

This is a difficult situation because a shattering window is just as likely to be caused by a flying object as a defective piece of glass. The rear window on my Honda Odyssey also shattered for no reason. The dealer would not cover it under warranty but the Customer Service people at American Honda did. I pointed out that the car was new, the service people didn’t find anything in the car that could have caused the damage and that the car was relatively new. The entire cost of the window replacement was reimbursed.

Re: (XK120)

It wasn't too hot out, and overcast.
Here's another thread:
http://www.v70xc.com/forums/sh...pp=10
2 instances of it in this thread and both covered under warranty.
Here's another one:
http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/...tered
Guess i'll just keep reading until the supervisor gets back to me, looks more and more like a defect though.
I know what everyone is saying and I agree, it's a tough call, but there are several instances (one guy just closed his hatch and it shattered). I haven't found one instance in a Volvo where it WASN'T covered under warranty so why is my case any different. My wife's account of the incident was almost word for word of several other stories. And there was nothing in the car.
Oh, and I should clarify the glass is 635 and they want 600 for labour to take the headliner off and everything. I really feel that they think i'm trying to take them for a ride but really i'm just trying to point out that i'm not the only one this has happened to and that many others have been covered under warranty. I mean, if I was out to soak them I would have asked for a loaner car and whatnot (we have a vehicle we can use for the time being).

Re: (tmtalpey)

Thanks, that one I have not seen. I found this part particularly interesting.....
As an update, I dropped off the car this morning at the dealership. In speaking with them this afternoon they have not been able to identify the cause of the shattering. The replacement glass will arrive tomorrow at which point they will need to disassemble the sun roof mechanism and the head liner to make sure that they remove all the broken glass. It will also give them a chance to look for any foreign object that may have contributed to the break. They said, though, that due to the way that the glass bowed outward that it appeared to be caused from some type of inward pressure, and would certainly be covered under warranty.
Sounds EXACTLY what mine looked like (I took pictures) it was blown outwards. The part about the glass is the same too, there was one piece that was quite big and pointed at both ends.
Also, yet ANOTHER case covered under warranty.

Re: (TFS)

600 for labor? that's nuts! If you end up having to pay, find a glass/sunroof shop and have them do it, most likely will get you a better piece of glass as well and cheaper to boot.
A competant tech should have the liner out in 30min or less, it's not that complicated a job. Install should take about the same amount of time. Replacing the glass should not take more than an hour? So a $300 an hour labor rate?
Any other Volvo dealer in area you could call for a price? The glass shouldn't be more than $350 either.
