I was planning on driving out to the Glen to race at the track in the novice section with trackmasters. My friend who used to race Nascar modified is going with me. He's from Rochester so he knows the area. It's about a 9-10 hour drive from my house, but I'm willing to go if you guys think it's worth it and especially if some of you fellow SS members will be there with their Rs.

Let me know if a bunch of you go and I can probably have my friend give you a tour of the Racing Library in downtown WG

Re: Anyone going to Watkins Glen over Labor Day? (soledoc)

I'm gonna be there in 3 weeks for a 3 day skip Barber racing course. Does that count?

You should get some good experience.
Any tips from the past folks who have gone? ie. preparing the car, what to bring, where to stay, etc. I'm probably planning on leaving Friday and staying until Tuesday and just racing on Mon, Labor Day.

I assume your going on the track so you might start with a good cleaning and a good coat of wax to help protect the paint somewhat. Don't forget to clean and wax your wheels, they will be much easier to clean the brake dust off later.
A good air pressure gage and a torque wrench with a 3/4" socket to torque the wheels, you might want to check them after every track session.
Make sure you have plenty of brake pad left, you will be braking much harder than on the street. You might want to take off the rotor back plate on the front rotors to help cool the rotors and Ti shims will also help here. I would highly recommend you flush your brake system with fresh brake fluid.
Your going to want to clean your windshield after every track session. Rags and a cleaner, you might want to check your oil too, bring a spare quart of oil.
While on the track, you will be driving with your windows open, dress for the weather, Watkins Glen is on top of a hill and tends to be windy up there.
Don't forget a helmet, racing gloves and shoes if you have them.
Well this is a start, I'm sure others have ideas. Check this site out, it has a lot of info on the track and the surrounding area. I think Jim put it together so you know it'll be very helpful. http://www.trackpedia.com/wiki/Watkins_Glen
Last but not least, don't bend or break anything and have fun. If its your first time your in for a real treat.
Oh yes one last, last thing. If you are into computer racing sims, the Nascar 2003 PC game with the "boot" add on from the site above will help you learn the racing line at that track long before you ever actually see it. You'll be a step ahead of other novices who haven't been there yet.

Thanks for that info. I'll definitely take your suggestions. My buddy who's driving out with me has the X Box game with the Glen track on it and has the wheel and everything. I'm going to use it before I go. I can't wait!

It seems like the days of the Volvo Gang at WGI may be over... or at least largely diminshed. We have seen a lot of still pix and some videos from there but none that really give you an idea of what the track might feel like. I recently ran into these 2 which are from an SCCA IT race so slightly more agressive than DE stuff. But even still, they are the best videos I have seen to date. Greg Amy, the driver set a new ITA record in those sessions in his 2000cc Nissan NX2000, a 2:17. Caution, big files.. but good video.
http://fasttechlimited.com/vid...y.wmv
http://fasttechlimited.com/vid...2.wmv

That Nissan was causing him trouble. Why do you say the Volvo gang is over at WGI, there are some Volvo's in development right now, one that is
almost finished

The twice yearly Volvo GTG are largely over. There are no WC (Speed) races at WGI.
