My car seems to have developed a whine at around 1600-2000 RPMs.

I've shifted into neutral, and it goes away. Also, when it is in park, it does not whine - only in drive.

Car has 280k miles and had the tranny fluid flushed about 100k miles ago.

No difference with AC on or off.

I unplugged the alternator, and the whine is still there.

I'm going to try removing the accessory belt to rule out AC compressor, but the belts and tensioners are relatively new.

Any ideas or has anyone experienced this?

That's a perfect way to describe it. All in town in those gears.
