Anyone ever actually completely get rid of the rear hop? How?

I was in St. Petersburg last night for a concert and I was alone so I drove a bit more rapidly than I usually do with my two toddlers in the car.

It seemed that the rear was hopping quite a bit more than Im used to - It seems to happen in comfort or sport. I've already got ps2's, and when I got them it quelled the problem slightly, but didn't eliminate it.

I just had the car aligned as well, but the hop seems more noticable - at least it was last night. Im sure driving faster has much do to with it, but I would really like this to go away. They did not recalibrate the SUM after the alignment. Maybe that would help too. I had an mgb that had worn rear shocks and did this same thing.

Anyone have any info on special alignment specs and/or bushings that have solved the problem? I searched and couldn't find much. I'm also looking for a little more recent info.

Supposedly there are "new" bushings coming out in March-April timeframe according to JRL within this thread: http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=33274

The 05 R is now exhibiting the rear end squirrel almost as bad as the 04 R did...only 3k miles on it, but it's clearly still there in a Nov04 build date 05R.

Thanks Chuck -

I'll be anxiously awaiting these bushings. This is for me, the most annoying aspect of this car. It doesn't inspire much confidence when the rear end is actually moving around in a high speed corner. Maybe that E55 amg wagon is not such a crazy idea after all -

I agree. This "feature" simply ruins the driving experience. Our 05 R is really not much different than the 04 R -- now that I've experienced it loaded up and over rough pavement (4 people and luggage) having just taken a road trip the past two days. We hit one spot on I-85 Northbound around mile marker 76 today that had the tail do a large whoopsy-do that everyone in the car was giving each other that "Volvo R rear-end squirrel look" afterward. It reminded me of essentially how the 04 R behaved -- I would say that the 05 is somewhat better when lightly loaded perhaps than the 04, but when loaded down it doesn't seem to be much different. This whole section of I-85 continually produced rear-end squirrel today of varying magnitudes....sigh....

I was thinking of that 2003 540iT sport package car again all of the sudden for some reason.

05R.
Now if you read carefully, it's an entire rear trailing arm assy. larger in dia. by about 4 mm.

the 540iT sport - now that is a car with a composed suspension. I drove the sedan version and I would be very happy to drive that vehicle. I think the 4C just doesn't work. All the promises don't really amount to much in real world situations. I love the anti-dive/anti-squat stuff, but thats about it.

The feeling of insecurity when the rear end is hopping all over the place is very dissapointing.

Its really pathetic when my 2.5 year old daughter notices it. The other day I was going over some raised manhole covers on a sweeping bend to the left. The rear end "gets squirelly" as the yahoo's in nascar describe it - and my daughter says "what was that, dada"........................

Re: Anyone ever actually completely get rid of the rear hop? How? (Grendel)

Had new bushings installed on mine after complaining that the car would hop to the left when passenger's side rear wheel hit the right combination of bumps. The dealer went to replace all bushings and one of them would not go easily. When forced in, it cracked the lower sub-frame of the suspension and the dealer had it replaced. They said it was a very skinny piece of metal that it went into. After replacing that part, they did an alignment and the I have not experienced the hop since. YEAH!

Ugh, I can just imagine the confused looks service writers are going to give me when I complain about hop and bump oversteer and why I want my rear trailing arms replaced. Then all the anxiety it's going to cause me when techs can't reproduce the hop because they don't know what I'm talking about and telling me everything is fine.

Given that it is a warranty issue, our respective dealers should not charge for or care about installing the new rear trailing arm. So far, Volvo of Dallas has not charged me for any software upgrades (TCM, door locks/lights, seat temp, etc.) or the new and improved exhaust bracket.

They want me to come back for future Rs. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Grendel

Don't wait too anxiously, I have the mod on my car, tried it for a week and it's now back with the dealer as it did not fix anything. This is the UK and a technical representative is driving it next week.

My response to the dealer was I don't know what this fixes but it surely is not the side step.

Well, maybe I'll hold out hope for the new trailing arms.........................

Fred, the mod you're talking about is the new bushing part, correct? Did it even provide a slight improvement, or is it exactly the same? It would be really cool to "get this sorted" as they say.

Thanks for the update -

Re: Anyone ever actually completely get rid of the rear hop? How? (Grendel)

I would say that it does not sidestep quite as many times, but when it happens it is just as severe.

Yes it is the new bushing. I've also had two new sets of tyres and countless alignment checks. The tyres make the biggest improvement. As I say a techie is driving the car on Wednesday.

There is so much I like about this car but the side step issue infuriates me, on the roads we have here it makes for a car which is clumsy and not very surefooted.

Interestingly I drove an R of the same age on 17's that did not have any of the fixes last week. I had wondered if the 18's contributed or made it worse - they don't.

Bushings only?
That won't make much of a difference.
As I said, these new arms are about 5mm fatter PLUS new and different type of bushings

I still say it's the 4C shocks. If the rear suspension was that flexible, the car would not feel good even on a smooth road. My '04 V70R (REV2) was awsome on smooth roads! I think the rears are trying to react to the deflections of the fronts and it DOES NOT WORK!!! Three static settings would be much better.

Re: (PA70RR)

Agreed!
Pull the 4C fuse and it's fine

Re: Anyone ever actually completely get rid of the rear hop? How? (Grendel)

Is there a definitive solution to this problem. I took delivery (in the UK) of a 2005 V70R last week.

It happened on a really bad, uneven, country road and was most noticable in Sport and Advanced. The front left of the car travels over a rut or sunken drain cover and all is OK. The the rear of the car hits the same road feature and the rear end tucks in slightly to the left.

Since I installed the Evolve springs the hop is at about 25% of what I felt before the spring change. The nice thing now is when it does happen I don't get that "oh s***" reaction, but rather a "hmm, that again, no problem".

Re: (Britspeed)

The hop in mine is now virtually eliminated.
I have still yet (next week) to get the new arms and bushings
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING is to rid your car of those Pirellis. They exaserbate the problem the most.
I now have suspension Rev 4 plus a careful alingment with the correct rear toe setting.
I've been driving around for a week now in ALL suspeneion modes and haven't had a hop or shudder yet, the latter being the key.
NO MORE SHUDDERING in the rear (which causes the hop)
For the first time it actually feels better than "pulling the fuse"

Arms and bushings for now are for 04s only.
YOUR BEST BET IS TO THRASH THE P ZEROS.
Can I emphsize this enough?
I have Michelins PS2s, total night and day in all aspects

Re: (JRL)

So JRL, all you have done is a software update for the suspension , an alignment and better tires...any springs or bars?

Re: (pafox)

I can't emphasize JRL's motion any more to get rid of the stockers. I switched to Nitto NT555s and it pretty much eliminated all of the rear hop (I can feel it happen once it a while but the situation for it to happen now has to be perfect whereas in the past, any manhole cover I drive over, the car goes nuts). Get rid of the Pzeros and go with a different tire first. My car is bone stock. I don't even know which Rev I'm on (3 I think).

Yes, plus these new brake dampeners, but they wouldn't have anything to do with the "hop"
ONCE MORE.
GETTING RID OF THE PZEROS IS A MUST

Re: (JRL)

I am thinking of switching to PS2's, currently riding on Kumho ASX for the winter. I would like to pick up another set of 18" Pegs( or something ) and just swap back and forth....
