Had to travel from Philly to NoVA today. Really tested the merit of my AWD. Made it in four and half hours. Not bad considering the weather...
The S60 wasn't as stable in the snow as I thought it would be. I feel more secure when I drive my Cross-Country.
Anyone know how WINTER MODE (WM) works? Does it just make sure the car starts in a lower gear? Is it okay to use WM at speed? Like over 30MPH?
The most notable thing during my drive today was how much the car started shuddering...I was travelling around 40 to 50 mph and my car was shaking like crazy. I'm not sure if it was because of all the snow build up on the front spoiler, but I couldn't figure out any other reason. Any other thoughts?
Question: On the dash on the right cluster gauge, when the yellow triangle with an exclaimation point starts blinking, is that the only time when the AWD is engaged? If I read correctly, the Haldex system works 95% front - 5% rear under normal conditions...then just assigns power to the corresponding wheel that is slipping. Right?
TIA.

Heheh, I think you were driving it to fast.
The triangle means DSTC/STC is engaged probably due to bad tire grip and heavy foot.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised at the way that my demo wanted to fishtail. But I realized that I was too heavy on the gas pedal. Once I was driving it with moderate pressure, the car was very sure-footed. You can't compared it to the XC because the wagon is a bit heavier. I did not have any prblems today. The XC90, on the other hand, felt TREMENDOUS! I am sure that the extra weight, more aggressive tires and DSTC did not hurt!
Yannis

I got to mess around in the XC90 today myself, and you are right, you can't shake it in the snow. What a great step for Volvo!

My first post - enjoying this informative forum. I must admit that my AWD reacted pretty well despite one bout of slippage in a turn (speed). I like the Winter mode (starting in 3rd) in startup after stops, but really liked easily getting up my unshoveled inclined driveway last night.

The "shuddering" could be from snow buildup in the wheels. It acts as an imbalancer.

Re: Anyone drive in this storm? (Theodore Ruxpin)

Final total in York, PA area was about 8 inches. My new S-60 (front wheel drive only, manual 5-speed) handled beautifully!! I found it quite stable with very predictable behavior. Intentionally locked up back wheels in a couple of turns (with nobody else around) and found it was quite easy to recover. The traction control seemed to do a great job - did not have much of a problem at all starting from a standstill on an uphill slope with poor road conditions. The thing I found was that on unplowed roads, the wide stance sometimes allowed only the tires on one side to track in the path cut by other cars.
SUV owners, please forgive this comment. But it was amazing that the accidents that I passed ALL involved an SUV. One accident with two vehicles were BOTH SUV's (one was a Land Rover - very sad to see). Either these people do not know how to handle their trucks or they blindly buy into the marketing of "go anywhere, do anything".

That shuddering could either be ice build up on your wheels or your DSTC/ABS system working overtime. It can brake each wheel individually and reduce throttle input. On BMW's you can hear DSC working, as I have witnessed on the 5-Series.
Just remember, no car can defy the laws of physics.
-Drew
