when I had similar question asked, answers were pretty much inline. The recommendation was - sell it, buy a car w turbo. that's what I did.

Tow it behind a turbo Volvo???
Maybe aftermarket exhaust to make it breathe a little better. But that's a lot of dough for something you probably won't feel very much.
Sorry, I'm no help.

It's 168 HP. It gets up to 70 MPH crusing speed okay. But if you are worried about "fast" then get another car with 200HP min.

1) Go to Autozone and buy some silicone hoses (red, blue, or yellow, doesn't matter) and a sticker pack, and install them on your car. Get an 8" tach while you're at it, and maybe a motorcycle muffler.
2) ???
3) PROFIT!!
Oh, sorry, thought I was on a Honda board.
Seriously, you'd have to invest some major time/money into major internal engine work, and in the end you probably wouldn't get that much out of it anyways. Sad to say (I like NA power, too), but the "buy a turbo" is accurate.

you can install a throttle body plate from a volvo 960. see the write up here:
http://www.matthewsvolvosite.c...19204
i just drove a n/a 850 automatic on sunday and it was painfully slow off the line. that 960 plate should help.

It appears most of these responses are elitist or at best trivial attempts at humor. Too bad the guy can't get a decent answer from all of you experts. Some folks are a bit cash strapped and prefer to work on their cars as money and parts become available. Over in the VW community there is no shortage of people who actually do install turbos on stock NA engines and have great success building reliable daily drivers/

Even if doing the work themselves, the parts cost alone to do a turbo conversion would far outweigh the cost of just selling the NA car and buying a turbo.

Even an enthusiast who is not 'cash strapped' looks back at times and wonders why the .... he continues to drop $ into these V's.
There's an NA on here w/ some serious mods (veloc. stacks, etc), but I'm sure he's got a lot (2 words! ) of $ in it. If I'm not mistaken, the output he reported is not more than what a stock or near stock T5 would make.
There should be one of those permanent posts above (with the yellow "!"), with the correct answer to this question - Yes, it's possible, but the costs far outweigh the VERY minimal (maybe 20-25hp for a turbo conversion, maybe 1-5 hp for a CAI + exhaust) benefits.
These cars are NOT your average V-dub, either, but more (moar ) power to that crowd. The last modded VW that tried to mess w/ my T5M was the LAST VW I wasted my 'petrol' on - it was like taking candy from a baby!
