Well, the parents would only buy me a volvo, so I got stuck going half for an '89 740 turbo with 140K mi's on it. I decided to mod it about three months after I got it (unfortunately my mom drove it while I had my permit, and at 150K she had everything done, so I don't need new brakes, or shocks, or a new turbo, that was done too, wish I had put a better Garret turbo in). Well anyways, as of now, I have a magnaflow muffler on it, and a K&N airfilter on it. I am planning on getting an IPD sway bar, and loweriong springs. The sound systems consistes of Infinity Kappa 3 way 6.5's in the front, JL audio 2 way 5.25's in the back, with an Infinity basslink in the trunk(been thinking about switching it for 2 JL audio 8's which will still fit on the gas tank ledge). MY alpine V12 should be here in the next month. I've also been thinkg about putting a touring wing on the car. As soon as the break pads wera out, I'm getting EBC greenstuff pads, as my car is forest green, adn they are great pads. Also, inside I have a yellow and black steering wheel cover, with yellow and black shoulder pads. My goal for this car is not to have it be incredibly fast, just fast enough so when people see my mcar with it's "Powered by Volvo" decal on the front, it will surprise them with a touch of speed. I'm lloking for mods of any sort ranging under 500$ to do to the car, as I will be taking this car with me to college, and it has at least another good 6 years (most likely more) left in it.

Well first things first make sure every thing is up too par on the 7 ie oil pressure http://********************/smile/emthup.gif mainly these engines are not the best http://********************/smile/emthdown.gif . And lose the Magnaflow and get IPD"S exhaust I love mine http://********************/smile/emsmilep.gif.And if you lower it buy Bilstien or Koni shocks sway bars http://********************/smile/emthdown.gif .My 945 t handles worse than my 244 Ti that i spent less money on.And when you lower it you will get BUMPSTEER http://********************/smile/emthdown.gif .Feel free to e mail me if it has to do with the 7 or 9 series chances are I have done it. I am NOT just a person who posts and do not know what they are talking about I am A Volvo technician. http://www.swedespeed.com/resources/gallery/auto_shows/carlisle_import_02/volvo_rwd/pages/04.html

Re: (Greenchunks)

2 JL 10w6s will fit under the window in the trunk of a 740, i used to have that set up in my car. I also have the EBC greenstuff pads, the work very well during track days, with repeated braking from 60-90 mph, no fade at all. I would also suggest getting the Ate slotted rotors while upgrading the pads, the brakes work even better and they cost less than stock, plus they look cool too.

As far as suspension goes, get the IPD sway bars, they provide the most noticeable handling improvement. I run the IPD sway bars on both my 740s, and feel uneasy going into any corner in a 740 without them. As for springs and shocks, I am currently running Blisteins and Apex springs on my '89. This is an extremely stiff setup, it doesn't like potholes too much, but it outruns vdubs and hondas on sweeping onramps. My major problem with this setup is that even though the springs are rated as a 40mm drop, the car only looks an inch lower, hell, my mom's 850 is the same height, and its stock! I have been told this is due to the Blistein's stiffness, but am not totally sure. Looking for a slightly softer and lower drop on my '88, I am planning to use Boge Turbo Gas shocks and Intrax springs.

Regarding power adders, I would have to say a good exhaust is the best thing to start with. I run a MVP turbo back 3" on both 740s, turbo lag is almost completely eliminated, and by bolting it on you gain approx 2 psi boost pressure. on my '88 i cut a full second of the 1/4 mi. at the same boost pressure (12 psi) by adding the MVP exhaust, a drop in K&N, and Nology hotwire spark plug wires.

Sorry this post is so long, hope this helps.

Do you know what the respective rates of the IPD and APEX springs are? I'm setting my 745 up for the occasional track day too and would prefer the stiffer set up, but with a 3.5" flowmaster system I don't have a whole lot of room to go down.
And excuse the newbie question, but who carries the APEXs?

Re: (Caveman)

I'm not sure what the spring rates are exactly, but the apex/bilstein combo is on the stiff side for the street, i have a hard time trying to bounce test my shocks (car goes down less than half an inch). However the car has some lean in corners when autocrossing, even with the ipd sways and apex/bilsteins. As far as availabilty, I'm affraid I can't help you with that, since my springs orginally were purchased by a old Turbobricks member in Europe somewhere, he sold them to me because he gave his volvo to his dad. You can try and check www.apexsuspension.com , i'm not sure if they have dealer listings though.

Bearable on the street, but my current setup gets a little annoying over potholes, which we have a lot of here in Hawaii. I would like something a little softer for my daily driver, but for the weekend warrior car it is a very good setup.
