Not that I am nutso hiding out or anything, I am just looking for a little more entertainment on the road. Currently I am checking out some Bearcat handheld police scanners...and have run across some interesting things such as scanners that will tell you when a police car is within a few miles of you...then I look at Jammers, what a treat those are...that's all I need, more gadgetry...I already have a GPS, Cell phone, headset...and now am looking for a little roadside entertainment.
Do they make scanners with CBs built in? Just looking for the handheld variety, so I can take it out on the ATv as well.

Re: Any of you guys use police scanners? (Ski Brick)

I myself used to play around with all that stuff, but for different reasons. I stopped after I got arrested for soemthing else and the scanner, radar detector, and jammer all got me in a whole bunch of trouble. They did really have any way of proving that I was using these things wrongly, but the combination was pretty incriminating. I have to say, the Jammer and Radar detector proved useless in the end anyway, cops are getting smarter, they know these things exist, and they know how to get you when you have them. I was caught for speeding, the jammer didnt work at all and the radar detector was a little too late. Now I have gone legit, so to speak, and I have nothing left of these items. I had a K40 detector and valentine One detector, a K40 laser jammer, an active radar jammer kit, and a bearcat police scanner isntalled. I guess if you really want a police scanner to play with, then go ahead, have a ball-I dont know if they are illegal in an of themselves, but im warning you now from my experience, adding a detector and jammer will guarantee you dont get off on any tickets. I went over this before and was given the old, but I wont get pulled over with this stuff, well yes you will, I did more than once, and you will likely get what I got, a loss of license for 6 months, points, a record, who knows whatelse.

I wouldn't think that it would be illegal at all to have a scanner or jammer in your car...although you would get the ticket without much question...I wouldn't think that they could take your license or anything. It's not illegal to own anything that disperses light, or listens to airwaves.
It's more road entertainment for me...the tunes get old and I want some more real life entertainment...scanners would be fun cruising around.

I know they're illegal here
I've heard police radar detects you first anyway though. Having a detector will give you a fine and the cops get to smash it on the curb in front of you. You have to pick up the pieces or else you'll get a litering ticket on top of it. I can't image what a jammer ticket would be!?
Kinda sucks. And yeah I can't see a speeding ticket being very friendly on top of this.

They are completely legal here...however you just don't get to talk your way out of it...I keep mine concealed and very much hideable in the event I get tagged...but I am just a gadget guy, and keep all sorts of electronics around the car, to include the gps, etc.
I'd be rather ticked if a cop took my radar detector and smashed it...we'd be talking assault on an officer, after I ripped his teardrop spotlight off his car and smashed it for him to witness...just kidding.

Re: Any of you guys use police scanners? (Spearzy)

I live in Upstate New York, and they are completely Legal here, well Detectors are. I dont know about the scanners. I do know however that active jammers are completely illegal in every state in the United States. However passive jammers, which dont work at all, are legal in most of the states that radar detectors are allowed. Like I said though, passive jammers dont work at all, I am yet to see a test that actually shows them to be effective. What I did find is that the K40 laser jammer and a diffuser cover makes your car pretty good against laser detection, but up here few cops use laser. The only jammers proven to be effective against radar is the active jammers, which dont use light but actually send out and activly jam the radar. The gun will get either an error code or more often a preset reading. These are not available prebuilt because thats illegal, however you can get plans and parts from some companies, they cost around 600 to 1200 dollars or so for the kit. This is the route I took, I was caught with one, I no longer have it, they didnt smash it, but I got a fine for it. I wont go into the details of this case, and I will add that at the time I was using drugs heavily and had enough of a quantity to get intent to sell charges. Now I know you are thinking that I probably had the book throw at me over this, but listen the drug charges were dropped in the end. They got me on everything they could and it all started with some juvinile street racing. I dont even mean organized street racing either, I decided to race some kid at a stop light and then later in a parking lot, just the two of us, we got caught, It was way too late by the time I detected him, and he knew what I had because he didnt radio in until after he was persuing me, and I wasnt getting away. I didnt really try to run, I knew I was caught, but still I had the book thrown at me. That was case number one. I lost my license for the street racing not the equipment, 6 months. Ok so I get it back, and I start in again, this time all I had was the scanner and radar detector, no jammers. Guess what, again, different part of the state, but again I got caught for speeding. I wasnt speeding by a lot, 78 in a 65, I wasnt racing, it was on the highway, but I had that stuff in my car. The cop looks around, notices the radar detector, asks some questions about it, then begins looking around again and notices the scanner, asks about it, has me step out of the car and does a search. Now I had cleaned up my act majorly by this point, no drugs or any other illegal items. So he writes a ticket for everything he finds, or atleast made a list and gave me just a speeding ticket. I hire a lawyer, we go to court, and this judge in this ******* town throws the book at me. I lose my license again for 6 months because of the points, had to take a driving safety course, and I was yelled at for half an hour by the judge about why I shouldnt have these items. Guess what, I have nothing now, I dont have a radar detector, I dont have a scanner, no jammers, nothing. I dont speed nearly as much, I dont street race at all-other than the occasional stop line dual, and I have been pulled over a few times for minor speeding, but I am yet to get another ticket. I havent even had to talk my way out of it either, they just tell me to slow it on down. So my view is that radar detectors are worthless, you are more likely to get tickets with them, so do your speeding on the tracks instead. As for using a scanner for entertainment, have a ball, but honostly I dont believe that is your reasoning, your choice of gadgets and comment about it telling you about when cops are near by does not sound like entertainment. If you want entertainment that bad, start carrying donuts and coffee and next time you see a cop trying to hide, pull up next to him and offer him some, you will be amazed at how shocked he will be that you found him. As for those of you who think that hiding detectors will help or keep you from getting caught, nope sorry wont happen, cops look for those now and have better detector dectetors. The first detector I was caught with was hidden, and guess what, it is apparently illegal in most all cases to hide the detector, even though you can have them they must be in play view, so again, if you are caught with them, there is another ticket for you. The second one I had was an Escort model taken apart and mounted in the car, again hidden, got in trouble for that, cop found it in about 5 minutes. The last ticket I got was with a regular valentine one model with the remote, it was in plane sight, not a big deal ticket wise, but I was not getting out of it, he noticed and commented on it, he made it clear that it was like consent of guilt just by having it.

Have any of you tried one of these? It is called a Beartracker by Uniden. It looks pretty much like a radar-detector, but it is a scanner.
I have heard from people that it is more of an entertainment thing. Something to pass time while getting bored driving on the highway, just to listen in, but can be helpful.

-Drew

#1 it is not illegal at all to hide a detector in states that it is legal to use them, no matter whether you have them installed stealth, or rip it off the dash and toss it in the glove box...there is nothing illegal about it. However, my point was, if you get pulled over and Johnny Law sees the detector, he is less likely to let you off with a warning.
I mentioned scanners that notify you of the presence of police, only because I heard someone had their car all rigged up for that sort of stuff...I have no intentions of utilizing it for evasion or other purposes than simple entertainment.
I am just looking for a little fun while driving around....harmless fun. Listening to traffic is not a crime.

Re: Any of you guys use police scanners? (Ski Brick)

I understand that, but a cop will not listen to your reason, he will feel it is for some illegal reason I would bet. I guess it depends on how young you are, but If you resemble in anyway, the groups of street racers, and live in an area were cops are hunting for them, it will get you into trouble. Scanners are very popular with street racers as a means to evade cops, and the cops know it. As for the Hidden Detector deal, this is what I was told and were I was told it. The Judge I had told me that In New York state, wear radar Detectors are legal, it must be in plain sight to an officer. Any attempt to hide the detector is illegal. He also told me that the law is not just a New York state law, but is true in most parts of America, and that he was under the impression that is was a recent National mandate that these be in plain site. This is as of two years ago. To be completely honost, and I tried this argument, which isnt good, Active jammers are illegal, so they dont actually sell any completed ones. So if that is the case, and hidden detectors are illegal, then why do they sell them. I dont understand that part, but frankly I was shown in righting the New York State law on this issue, so if you live in New York state and are caught with a hidden detector, it is illegal.

Ok so I dont know the restrictions in Idaho, I could look if you want, but type in Idaho scanner laws in a search engine and you should find good info. In New York State it is illegal to have any sort of scanner capable of recieving police or firemen signals. It is even illegal to transport a device capable of this, even if not in use, if caught you get a Class A misdemeaner and the item is confiscated until the case is dealt with. Personaly I would like to know how you could transport the device home legaly, I guess the cop would have to bring it to you. This is the basic law, until 1998 the law stood that this included radar detectors. It was explicidly written out, but radar detectors do recieve police signals. An appeal was made and it was decided that since they can not decode the signal in any way, demodulate it, that they wont be illegal anymore. So as the law stands, Radar detectors are legal, as I knew, and Scanners are illegal, which I didnt know. I got in trouble with one and didnt even realize that we had a specific law against them, can tell how much I was paying attention. As for the hiding, apparently, and I could ask my lawyer about this, the judge manipulated a law that was interpreted differently by the NYS supreme court to fit his needs. I mean, he has last say, all I can do is appeal it, but its not that its illegal to hide them really, as it seems, it used to be, but now It looks like they allow it. The law was not specific on that specific issue, so its hard to say. I also noticed that many different private sites, though i did go to the NYS goverment site for source info, many personal sites for NY laws seem to feel that many of these laws are abused and many are not well known. As for the Scanner law, I dont know the specifics of Idaho's law, but the NY law comes from a Federal law, with some added stuff, so it may very well mean they are illegal to have from non-peace officers and what not period. Not sure on that.

On a side note radar detectors are illegal in MD and VA. They're pretty strict about it too. Nevermind Federal law, when the cop pulls you over what happens there is what's going to effect you.

well, when my mom was a photojournalist, she slept next to a police scanner. she also took it with her to events where police and firefighters were present so she could take pictures. also, all of the journalists she knew had them.

Re: Any of you guys use police scanners? (ontheheel)

It's amazing the response a simple subject emotes. I am still looking at scanners, have my wallet set on a nice Uniden Bearcat 245XLT mobile scanner. Regardless of legality, I am going to pack one in the wagon, just because I am bored on the road, and the backroads of Montana don't offer up too much cell coverage. It's just one of those gotta haves, and although I know it is completely legal, can easily play off the "duh, I didn't know that" routine here in the inland northwest.
It's harmless entertainment, but I can listen to hunters tracking animals, police, if there is any, traffic and weather, and who knows what else.

Actually police radar detactors are illegal here but scanners are fine. Anyone can buy a good scanner at radio shack. Police use coded frequency that need to be decoded, I'm sure it can be done but that is likely bending the law, not sure.
A friend has a scanner but it isn't even plugged in these days, all it picks up is truckers or people talking on their portable home phones (which can be entertaining if your bored, or may cause boredom)
