It's time to replace the R: 04 6speed with 126K. Still runs great, but it's our only car, and I'm feeling like I should get something more reliable.
I love everything about the R, except, of course the turning radius and the fact that I have to re-install my teeth after a drive on harsh roads.
We do a fair bit of driving with a son playing soccer all over the northeast and mid-atlantic, and college visits have taken us from New England to North Carolina.
So I've been looking for an '06 or '07, and have watched the prices climb. But I still worry that I could be hit with a typical V70R catastrophe, even though I've already replaced a clutch, timing belt, and AWD angle gear & splines.
I'd like to spend in the low to mid $20's for something else, realizing that VR's are now fetching high $20's. I've looked at other wagons (BMW 3 series, Audi A4, etc) but they are smaller. I've even had a look at the Acura RDX, but it seems so sterile.
Does anyone have any experiences (good or bad) with these cars as an R alternative? Anything else I should consider? I'd like to stick with an AWD/4WD wagon or SUV to haul the kid back & forth to college, or hust have some utility.

All I can say is if you're worried about reliability stop looking at the Audi's. They have a high repair rate and are more expensive to repair than volvo's are.

As much as I hate to say it, the RAV4 Sport V6 may be a good choice.
You could also have JRL buy that loaded up 17k mile '07 black sapph/gobi VR for you and do a trade + cash. You'd have enough leeway $-wise to make it almost new.
My mantra.... stay away from Audi's!!!

There is nothing that replaces a VR. There are some close competitors (535xi touring) but even used, those are over 50k!!
RDX: my advice is don't do it. It's smallish cargo wise, has a VERY stiff ride, the turbo is raucous, loud and laggy. That said it does handle well and is quick when the boost is up. But it's also very thirsty.
I'd find a mint VR. Sure it might cost you mid-high 20's, but what else is there out there at that price? Rav 4 V6 is about as close as you'll get.

I'm just not feeling the RAV4.....interior looks like plastic on parade.......
If the outside of the Black VR is that bad, who knows what it's like underneath.........
I was thinking of an XC.......

If you are considering a smaller wagon, what about a hatch? New gen WRX 5 door, MS3, 5 door GTI could all be fun. You might need a roof top cargo box, but they would be a heck of a lot more fun than a cute 'ute.

Plus the turning radius on a R is not exactly that great.....
JRL can also have it CPO'd.
You wouldn't be losing much.

Right now it comes down to having a fun car with a little bit of utility, or a bigger suv or wagon that lacks the fun factor.
I guess since the OP would consider an SUV you could always look for a used Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.

i had a friend whose family owned two Audi A6's and would never buy Audi again. The first one was a 3.0 A6, at the dealership every 2 weeks. The next one they had was the 2.7 Bi-turbo. That was full of electrical problems.
My idea is that Audi's are for people to buy them new, keep them till 100,000km and then get rid of them because they start hurting your wallet.
