VW is joining the party. I hope Volvo answers back with a new R with the upcoming next generation S60/V70 line.
To me this might be the most direct competition to our R's. The S4 and M3 are in a slightly different class, but this Passat would be a shot across the bow.
http://www.leftlanenews.com/20...2007/

Re: Another R to join the group (flybynight)

Interesting. It doesn't say if it will be offered with 4motion, and the styling is not even close. It's still a passat at the end of the day. None the less, it's always good to see a new "performance" car on the market.

However it's price tag is about $5k too high and puts it too close to other German (and Swedish) competitors. The 3.6L Passat sedan is really nice, but I'm not paying $38k for one with Nav.
Now if they make a Passat R Wagon with 4 motion and price it right....

It does look interesting - now if they offer a variant (wagon) version, it would be very cool. A 300hp AWD DSG wagon would be interesting, but I would wait until a car magazine beats the living crap out of it in a long term test before I'd buy any VW again. The last three I've had have been terrible (2000 jetta 2.0, 2000 jetta VR6, and a 2003 passat 1.8t). Awful reliability, and the dealers were complete bastards.

Their brand got stuck somewhere between entry-level and luxury and no one wants to buy a overpriced German car that costs just as much to maintain as Audi or Mercedes, while trying to pass it off as an economical alternative to Toyota/Nissan/Honda.
If you think S60R is bad on resale, try looking at a 2004 or 2005 VW Phaeton, that car losses HALF of the value the first year along! I can get a 2005 for around 25k.

Re: Another R to join the group (stevectsai)

You know, that how VW is badly received in US is very interesting.
1) from what I have seen on the streets and looking at prices, VW is a premium brand in Europe - competing directly with Volvo, just under Audi/MB/BMW, but above Opel/Fiat/Japan/Korea vehicles.
2) our other car is GTI - 6 months, 5kmiles on the car, sweet - really sweet DSG tranny, nice car for 2-up ride and shopping trips. We had to visit dealer 3 times - once to pick up a mnual which was missing on delivery, second time when our daughter managed to disassemble rear cupholder, and third time for service.
We leased car - to be protected against quality (if I like it, in next 2 or 3 years I will trade it - or swap before lease end on a new one buying it outright). I would call this lease extended test drive....
So far, quality is v.good and dealer is friendly and helpful. Well, our frined is a service advisor there .
Kleks

First emotional stylistic reaction - BIG mouth and a BIG bum - nasty looking and too flashy for me - down to the horrid red R - verging on being ostentatious.

I sat in a W12 at the dealership, playing with all of the tech goodies and listening to the sweet motor. I know the values have plummeted, but you'd have to find one for sale to know what they are really going for. I've only seen two on the road since it was introduced and I'm in Microsoft land quite often. This car hit the market like a bag of overpriced dog poop. No one jumped for it...
As for the Passat, it's borderline hideous. Far too boy-racer for my taste, and the tailpipes look like they are straight off of the prototype for the next Pontiac Bonneville. YUCK! That said, I really don't think the R is on their radar screen. The car is styled to go after the affluent 20/30-somethings who can't see themselves in an Evo or STi.

Quote, originally posted by stevectsai »

no one wants to buy a overpriced German car that costs just as much to maintain as Audi or Mercedes.

amen, brother.
- Tryg

I would never be caught dead in it the way it looks now, but part of me thinks that the new GTI is so restrained stylistic wise (as was the previous R32 and 337) that VW couldn't possibly produce it as it looks now.
