Hi All,
I've been obsessed with getting an R for a couple weeks now, and have a local dealership looking for CPO-worthy 06s and 07s while I try to sell my audi a4. I had told my salesperson to search for MTs only, but opened it to the 06-07 GT as well. Yesterday I discovered this forum, and the angle gear discussions...holy wow. I'm impressed with the problem-solving skills on display here.
Anyway, I'm considering focusing my search on 06-07 GTs only, to get the better bevel and collar gears. Here in MI the chances of spinning the fronts with the rears hooked up are pretty high...it's gonna happen. Now I have some burning questions, I THINK I've done all the required reading and I need to go to work now!
For those folks who have had angle gear issues, or are worried about it: looking back, had you known about this issue (assuming you didn't), would you still get your R? How immune to the angle gear issue is the TFSC80 really? I really don't like auto trans as a rule, does this one seem to be pretty bulletproof? Seems like a lot of people are running high HP through it, any common troubles? I searched, but my searcher is tired so I might have missed something. Thanks in advance.

Re: Another "looking for R" thread (braincramp)

You should contact JRL (he has around 45,000 posts so you should be able to find one of his and send him an email or IM) and see what he can find you at auction. If you have time to wait for the right car, I'd look into buying through him.

Don't make a decision on AT/MT on the spline sleeve issue alone. While the issue has been going on for a few years now, it has only been six months or so since it has been a serious discussion between the members on this board. I'm optimistic that someone will come up with a stronger replacement. Just make you buy CPO to CYA for the time being.

Re: Another "looking for R" thread (braincramp)

Also, remember, car forums tend to be filled with enthusiasts. Enthusiasts are whiners by nature so the creaks and moans that we find are not what most owners complain about. True, broken angle gears, etc. aren't 'creaks and moans' but you're still going to hear about more problems on an enthusiast board than most average Joes will experience in ownership.
My '05 has been great and, despite all of the problems that I've read about and my own fears about milehigh costs of repair related to the 4C, I'm very happy with my purchase and don't regret it one bit.
Every type of car (Audi, BMW, MB, et al) has its problems. If you spend enough time on any of those boards, you'll read about common complaints -- some expensive, some not. I'm sure some might disagree but I don't think the R is so much worse than the average. There will always be lemons and there will always be shining star examples.
Get the car you want. If you WANT an MT, then get an MT. If you don't care then just get the car that most closely fits the bill. Oh, and if you do buy a GT, don't get pissy when I start making fun of your mangina. Consider yourself warned. But seriously, while I don't think there has been a broad scale poll of R owners to determine whether more problems occur on MT vs. GT models, from what I can tell on this forum, the problems don't seem to discriminate.
-Eric

DO NOT get a GT - get a manual!
I sold my beloved and highly modified S40 because it was an automatic. Manual is the only way to go.
I think the R suits me better than anything else in my range, I'm really excited to land one. Honestly my A4 is a manual, and my wife is just a bit tired of it. She loves her jeep GC (overland - really nice vehicle), but I have a feeling once she drives the R she'll be making excuses to take my car
Either way, GT or MT, it will be a big step up for me. I plan to drive it until the doors fall off, so I'm trying to figure which one will last longer. AT was the reason I had to pass along my old 540i so I'm trying to avoid a repeat of that.

I do agree a manual would be my first choice.
I have a GT and like it, there I said it, I like my GT.

nothing with a GT...sitting in NYC traffic dictates what one can truly have. with that said....i think one of the best (performance wise) R's here is a GT.

personally, i don't like the R MT. tried one out and hated the shifter feel and clutch; the shifter was not smooth and rather hard to move. the clutch was overboosted and lacked feel. overall, it wasn't an engaging experience.
so I ended up buying a GT since this is my family hauler and my other car is MT and offers much more performance. plus my wifey needs to drive the car and she can't drive stick. i also like the fact the 06/07 GTs have more robust angle gears.
to each his own.
