2005 T5 AWD V50 10, 000 miles: Smell similar to burning oil in the cabin after 15 minutes of driving. Taking it in this week. Anyone else have a similar problem? Hard to say if smell is engine oil, trans. oil, burnt fuel, etc.
V50 T5 AWD 2005 with 10, 000 miles.
Having angle gear replaced. Any others with this experience? I know it has been reported in other Volvo AWD's. Is it a design flaw, or did I just happen to get a defective angle gear. Thanks.
The angle gear transfers power from the front to the rear wheels in the AWD. The only symptom I noted was a faint smell of "Overheated" or burning hydraulic fluid. At first I could not tell if the smell was engine oil, but it does have a "sweeter" odor. It appeared about 15 minutes into driving.
I would be interested to learn if others have this problem, which has been seen in other AWD Volvos accordning to the service technician. I am trying to determine just how "common" it is.
Re: Angle Gear Repalcement on V 50 (BarentsBlueV50)
Okay, if so that may be the known issue with the angle gear's vent. I'm a little surprised they replaced the whole gear, I guess sometimes Volvo might want the whole thing back for diagnosis if they thought it was a fixed issue. Anyhow, it's not a mechanical failure like certain early Rs experienced.
I think I am the first one with an S60AWD that had the angle gear replaced (14,300 miles). I drive this care quite normally, nothing like someone might drive an R (mine is about traction, the R about sport).
Please do us all a favor and be sure to put in a complaint to Volvo Customer Care (email to [email protected]) and log a complaint at NHTSA (http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/).
The more we report this problem, the more pressure can be put on Volvo to extend the warranty on this part.
