I'm a new member, but I wanted to let you know that I just had my angle gear replaced under warranty on my 2004 S60 AWD at 14.3K miles. I see that this has been reported as an issue with the R, but I haven't seen anything yet on the AWD. Please note this car has not been driven hard at all; it gets a reasonable mix of around town & highway, so I am concerned about the longevity of this part. I will say the dealer was very good about fixing it - they had to overnight in the part and had it fixed the next day - no complaints there.
I filed a complaint with NHTSA and sent an email to Volvo NA about it because I think there may be a problem looming on the angle gear in general. I would like to see Volvo cover it as an extended warranty for all owners. I figure the more the word gets out and the more it is tracked, the better off we all will be. I encourage all AWD owners to keep an eye out for that oil leak spot slightly back of the center of the front wheels, and to report in if they have their angle gear replaced as I did.
I also have had front (at 8K) & rear (at 14K) stabilizer links replaced. The dealer says it's the lousy roads in New England and they replace them all the time. That doesn't give me the warm & fuzzies about future maintenance costs, either...

Re: Angle Gear replaced in an S60AWD (Rpark)

Yes the anglegear seems to be a big problem for Volvo AWD cars.
I had mine replaced for a year ago with 40kkm on the odometer. Now with 51kkm its leaking again. The leak is coming from the right side of the angle gear towards right driveshaft.
No performance driving here either.
I have also found an small oil leak from the turbo. Probably the return line.
I have scheduled visit to the dealer workshop on wendsday next week.
My car is an XC70 2.5T AWD MY 2003.

What were the symptoms that caused the replacement of the stabilizer links?

Re: Angle Gear replaced in an S60AWD (yekat)

A slight rattle & some minor looseness in the steering for the fronts; a slight rattle from the rear. The Tech picked up on the rears at the 15K service & angle gear replacement. Also had the rt front strut replaced at 8K last summer due to a fairly loud "squish" sound over every bump - even small ones.
Given my track record, I am considering an extended warranty. Anyone know anything about Warranty Direct?? Thanks.

With Volvo you may be better off buying the Volvo VIP warranty.
Also, Wynn's has a good warranty for Volvo. I do not know if a private party can buy the Wynn's without actually buying it from the dealer.

Re: Angle Gear replaced in an S60AWD (JRL)

Got the resposne from Volvo today:
"We are sorry to learn of the problem that you have experienced with your 2004 Volvo S60 R sedan." [Ummm, I said it was an S60AWD....]
"We contacted [the dealer] earlier today to review the concerns expressed in your email. We did receive confirmation of the Angle Gear repair on 4-17-06.
Please note that Volvo has not had reports of problems with this component. Volvo continuously collects data from our authorized retailers as well as customers regarding the performance of our vehicles. Volvo Cars of North America does not have a recall or extended warranty in place for the Angle Gear component. However, should a recall or service campaign be announced on this part at some point in the future; affected customers would be notified of such a campaign by letter.
Please be aware that normal driving patterns should not have an affect on the performance of the Angle Gear.
We understand that this experience is not to your expectation and for that we do apologize. We appreciate your bringing this matter to our attention and for giving us the opportunity to respond."
- I bought the Totalcare extended warranty just in case...

Re: Angle Gear replaced in an S60AWD (Rpark)

I also had my angle gear replaced but at about 70K. First symptoms include better gas mileage. 25mpg->27mpg, excessive wheel spin, and excessive torque steering. A failed angle gear drastically changes the handling characteristics of the car. After speaking with the dealer, they indicated that this is a frequent occurence although when I review the NHTSA site, there are not many complaints filed for such a failure.
This repair was out of warranty and expensive. Any owner of AWD should consider the extended warranty.
Are auto manufacturers required to report the types of repairs to the NHTSA or is it all on the consumer?

Re: Angle Gear replaced in an S60AWD (S60AWD-MD)

Update: I was "selected" to respond to my satisfaction with the Volvo Customer Care response. I felt the response was that they essentially blew me off (after all, I got it fixed, right?). I took this opportunity to again express my dissatisfaction that the angle gear had to be replaced, and took them to task for saying they had no reports of problems with this part.
I see we now have out first Angle Gear replacement in a V50 - at 10K miles. I don't think it's the driver...
Agian, I encourage anyone who has had a replacement to notify [email protected], and file a complaint at NHTSA (http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/) . Volvo really needs to extend the warranty on this part to 100K or 150K miles.

I have like 4-5k miles left on my normal warranty. How much does the extended warranty usually cost?
How much does an angle gear cost if replaced out of warranty?

This is a very well known problem for R owners, must reads for P2 AWD owners
http://forums.swedespeed.com/z...age=1
http://forums.swedespeed.com/z...age=1

Is this a problem with the newer pre-charged haldex systems as well? Sorry but i'm confused about some of this. I'm looking at an '08 AWD and wondering if this is still an issue?

Re: (iggy637)

I would expect to see I higher failure rate with the R cars given the power increase is driven by the increased boost, creating more heat in the exhaust gas and with the down pipe sitting above the angle gear just cooking it, it is no surprise these fail early in the service life. It also seems that the fluid is not checked in these as often and with the frequent weeping of oil out of the seals, which is cooked off before it becomes a drip from the high temps I bet many of these units are starved for lubricant and self destruct.

Re: (2002VolvoS60)

I change my transmission fluid every 30k, at that time I change the angle gear and haldex unit as well. Get a a pvc tub and snake it in there, use a vacuum pump to start the fluid drain and get out as much as you can. Keep in mid the fluid is different for the angle gear and haldex unit.
