Hi,
Looks like I have an angle gear overhaul in my future (leak) on my ‘02. Lovely.

I read the service bulletin on Matthews Volvo and in it they suggest replacing the vent if the new style is not already there. It also mentions that some don’t have vents. Is there an easy way to confirm type and existence before ripping everything out?

They all leak. How bad is it? I just top mine off every 10k or every other oil change. It's just a small weap. Also, if overfilled they will leak quite a bit until the level is settled.
Well hard to say. When I replaced the fluid in early summer I got a good amount out ie didn’t seem terribly low. I completely cleaned the housing at that time. At this point the housing is once again filthy....I would still refer to it as a “weep” but it’s a healthy weep.

You sure it's not the turbo oil drain? It's known to leak onto the angle gear. Take a look from underneath and look for oil accumulation.

Hmmm, I will check that. Thank you.
