I ordered the sleeve from the diesel for my angle gear. Today I took of the gear to find that the sleeve and gear splines are stripped out again. I replaced both the sleeve and gear last year due to the same issue and only put 40k on it. I have about 150k on it right now. Since I work at the dealer I called the regional rep and he said, well you are out of warranty by 12 days u should know that. 12/12 means 12 months not 12 months and 12 days. So they are not going to help w/ the repair. I am pissed. Also the part from the diesel does not fit the angle gear.

So it looks as if this collar is good for around 40k with moderate driving behavior.
Guys, seriously....If you are able to salvage a collar, please SEND IT TO ME. I know there have been talks about having something stronger made, but I am willing to do the leg-work and get this done. It is a real concern, and I know we can get some Volvo dealers on board with swapping in a stronger part once we have the proper support.
It's good to know that my replaced collar is nothing more than another ticking time-bomb.

The part measures up to the same diameters and lengths, I'd be interested to know what didnt fit.

Re: angle gear fail again.. (I Roll)

the d5 part dosnt fit the angle gear side it is too big. when u put the sleeve in u could spin the sleeve by hand in the angle gear beacuse the d5 part is just a little too big.. i will measure it monday if u want. i am going to replace the gear monday and am planning to inspect the sleeve every 15k and replace as necessary because my replace every 50k did not work so well. Only takes about 15min to pull the gear and sleeve if needed.

as a community we thank you for being a guinea pig for the D5 part, it is sad that it did not fit
you seem to go through collar gears a lot faster than anyone I (we)'ve seen
what are your driving habits?
do you have power mods?
do the collar gears break during the winter? vlvotech, You know parts warranty is backed by the manufacturer of the part, not by Volvo itself, right? Well, Volvo ponies up the dough, then bills it to their supplier, but, regardless, its not them, its the supplier. Your relationship with Volvo means nothing to the manufacturer of the part i n some european country..
Moving along, hpw is business at your dealer? Are you clearing 40 hours as a tech? I left my Volvo dealer in GA for a lack of work and poor dealer attitude. I miss Volvo a lot, but not the lack of cash i had. Sorry for the hi-jack.

Re: angle gear fail again.. (FEO)

i baby that car because i know of the issues. i drive 80% of the time on the highway to and from work. i also maintain it plugs every 30k,all fluids includind m66,and awd fluids every 30k also and now angle gear sleeve every 15k. i always keep light on the throttle. also most angle gears that i remove to reseal 50k and up usually endup needing a gear because of the sleeve has worn and taken the gear with it. i dont see this issue as much with the older cars such as the 98-00 xc70 and s70's when i remove those gears the sleeve looks new almost no wear. i been thinking of using a sealer between the anglegear and the trans to keep the elements out.

My challenge to you would be to remove your collar and sent to me for analysis, I'd bet yours shows wear just like the rest of us.
If my dealer is to be believed, this is a "common" problem for the Rs and an occasional problem for the 2.5T/2.4T AWDs as well that use the same collar.

I also think 90% of the failures come from the 04-05 group. I haven't seen that many 06-07's fail on here. I know they don't have the miles in some cases, but hell, the 04's aren't getting 20K on theirs.

...and how many of these 10000 don't have a flipping clue that they have no power going to the rear wheels?

Re: angle gear fail again.. (AthruC)

I still think it has something to do with the engine rocking. Thats how mine broke: upper engine mount tore, and the engine rocking back and forth on the rear driveshaft loosened it enough that I had 1/8" of play in my rear driveshaft. Since the upper engine mounts were changed to the firm, square one in 06+, that probably helps a lot in the discrepency between 04,5 and 06,7 angle/collar failures.
Between auto and manual, well, that may be the shifting.
There's also the spikes (one rear wheel on black ice). I'm not arguing that the design doesn't need improvement, but I think there are multiple contributing factors to the failure, however common it may be.

I think people driving on dry roads in warm climates would have a difficult time noticing their lack of AWD. Snow made me aware, might have caused it. Sometimes I think it's working, sometimes I don't know...
