Wheel Bearing Blues

2004 S60 R, 51K miles (Mash's former car). After taking a day trip last week, I really began to notice she was a startin' to hum in the rear; dissipates with leftward turn of the steering wheel. After spending quite a bit of time researching this (and expecting it to happen, based on frequency of reports) on here, I was 99% sure it was the left rear hub assembly. Went in to Brentwood for an oil change + front foglamp replacement this morning, and asked they also check the bevel/angle gear and rear bearings. Bevel gear is fine, left rear bearing is shot (big surprise). Cost of bearing diagnoses = 1 hour of labor, $133 . Estimate cost to fix:
2 hours labor @ $133/hour = $266
LR hub assy @ $195 .
Tonight, I might have a couple of and if this is the only thing that craps out for a while, a at the end of the year.

Not enough sleep last night, and the two issues were on my mind, and after I caught the goof I hit the edit button, but the change only appears when you open up the posting.

My car is out of warranty; fingers are crossed it stays "fine" for quite some time. Is it true failures are less common with the GT? As far as the wheel bearing, I expected at least one to go; it seems quite a few have on here right around the 50K mark. Since most of you are not from the St. Louis area, what did your dealers charge you to diagnose your bearings? Brentwood's $133 rate is higher than West County Volvo's $117, but my God - I'd be living high on the hog if I made even that per hour.

Other than that actual bevel gear failures are rare, but the collar gear that connects the bevel gear to the transmission is a common failure. You need to replace that ASAP when it breaks or else it can chew up the input shaft on your bevel gear.
