After 8 months of ownership of a Volvo S40 1.8, I've decided that the time has come to let it go. Instead I'll be the owner of a brand spanking new V50 2.4i with all the bells and whistles. My father phoned me this weekend and said he had found me this beautiful beast that was sitting in a parking bay at one of the Volvo dealerships in Cape Town. Still filthy from the trip down from Johannesburg, plastic on the leather seats and begging to be washed and driven hard. So on Monday I signed for a car that I have not seen - ohhhhh.
Since I can remember, I've always loved Volvo stationwagons. I just don't know what it is about them. My father owned two 145's at one stage, and we would drive the one the one day, and the other the next.
So am I mad for swopping my S40 for a V50 - keep one thing in mind please, I'm single as can be. What will people think???? Strange how one's outlook changes in a couple of years. Last time this year I was still driving a MINI Cooper...
Is something wrong with me???
Ciden (Kobus - RSA)

I think the V50 styling is actually nicer than the S40 and it certainly isn't the stereotypical Volvo station wagon... curvy, no straight lines.
And given the choice between a 1.8 sedan and a 2.4 wagon... that's a no brainer!
UKMatt

Re: (ciden)

I signed the papers for my V50 T5 AWD on my 30th birthday, about 2 weeks ago. You're not mad at all. I use the wagon for my business sometimes, but even if I didn't, I would have chosen it over the S40. Much cleaner looking in my eye, and MUCH better sightlines from the driver's seat.
My dad is also a long time Volvo guy, with a series of 740 turbo wagons, followed by 940's, 850's, and now a V70. What will your friends think? They'll love it. Hell, I've taken 2 different women out in mine, and they loved it too. It's a stylish car, and that says a lot about those of us who drive them. Enjoy the new ride.
Al

You're not mad at all. Consider: the V50 is just a small distance away from being a VW Golf - and a better performer than such. Is a Golf or a new Mazda 3 "not cool"? Where is the dividing line between a hot little hatchback and a bloated family wagon? Personally, even the V70 looks much more attractive to my eye than any SUV. Only maybe the old Country Estate wagons are superhuge.
Anyway, I'd always take a wagon over a sedan (not trying to offend here). Consider helping all your friends move from here to there. Consider buying a large TV. Consider puttering around town with a 88 key heavy digital piano. Consider that the V50 is very nice looking anyway! I was stunned by the beautiful black baby when they took me back to the shop to see it when I picked it up, newly ordered.
By the way, so you don't waste 15 years before realizing this : it doesn't matter a grain of salt what anyone else thinks!!! Consider it liberating to get a wagon. As you mentioned, there is something pretty neat about Volvo wagons. There always has been. Get roof rails!

I`m with you the dynamic trim V50 looks amazing. If you can afford to do it, do it. Simple as that.

Nobody, but nobody, builds a wagon like Volvo. You are most certainly not mad.

Tom.

Do you think we scared awd from what was almost certainly going to be a "wagons are for old people" response?

The only other car I was seriously considering when I made my S40 purchase was a certified pre-owned Audi S4 Avant. I loved every bit of that car; in fact, on more than one occasion I opened negotiations with the dealer on it. I didn't end up getting for a few reasons, but one of them was the constant remorseless heckling from friends and coworkers for looking at a wagon. Never mind that this wagon would have left them eating dust 10 times out of 10. I am single as well, and they just couldn't get their minds around the notion of a single, childless male with a wagon. No, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks in the end, and this was not the main reason I didn't get the car. But I did picture myself having to constantly defend my choice to just about everyone (even my then-girlfriend didn't get it), after purchase, and that would have taken just a bit of fun out of the car, I'm afraid.
Ironically enough, I find myself defending the Volvo more than a little as well. Apparently it's also a bit unsual for a single male to have one of those.

This probably depends on who you're trying to attract. If you are trying to rope 'em in using solely your vehicle, then neither Volvo sedan or Volvo wagon is going to help you here. You should maybe think about a Lotus Elise instead.
Really though, I'd look at it like this: if you're single and yet confident enough to drive a wagon without shame, it's a good thing. Wagons are sexy, but confidence is sexier.
