first off, i do really like my 2005 V50. there a few things i wish i could change, but in any event it's been a solid car while i've had it.
the scenario: i only owe a little bit on the loan, and have been thinking of selling it to get additional cash for taxes, investments, etc. i'd replace it with something i would lease (i have my own design business). the closest thing i can think of is a 4 door gti, 2008 or 2009. (i know the 2010 will be here soon, but in reviews i've read the 2010 is more of a refinement, vs a total overhaul that the mark v gti was.)
so does this sound nutty? i don't necessarily care about how many gti's vs volvo's i see on the road; there are quite a few of each in northern california. it's just the closest match in terms of fit and finish is the vw, and it some ways they're even...or the vw stands at a higher level.
so i'm looking or biased advice here. any experience with both autos?

Modified by acquasole1 at 9:29 PM 6-27-2009

Re: am i crazy to trade my V50 in for a...gti 4-door? (acquasole1)

My friend has a 2004 GTI 4 door, not sure this counts but hes driven my car and says my car is comfortable, stylish, and pretty speedy but the gti is more aggressive, semi-comfortable, and very quick.
2005? Depending on your age and family situation I would personally wait for the 2010l. In my opinion, it looks better, and its even more aggressive than the Mark V.

thanks for the details.
i think the 2007/8/9 gti was a total overhaul from previous years, and shares a similar platform with the audi a3. so i imagine a 2009 would be quite different from a 2004...not sure, though.
i like my V50 ride, but the combination of AWD, volvo sport suspension, and 19" wheels can be a bit stiff at times.

I went from a 2006 Volvo S40 T5 to a 2008 VW R32 so it's not exactly a GTI but close enough (and I've driven a GTI extensively on a couple of test drives). The Volvo wins in comfort (softer ride, the seats, those thick doors), but there are a lot of things I like about the MKV as well. The car is definitely more aggressive/sportier than the Volvo but still very much designed to be comfortable for daily driving, and the GTI sounds nice when you're punching it down the road. The VW's interior is very utilitarian, but it looks good I think and is very solid. Aesthetically, I still really like the aluminum waterfall dash in the Volvo C30/S40/V50. Are you looking at getting a manual or auto? If it's an auto the DSG transmission with paddle shifters on the GTI is awesome!
You're right, the MKV shares the same platform as the Audi A3. Part of it is also shared with the Audi TT too, but the TT has some special space frame aluminum work going on to shave off 300 pounds or so. If you can, I'd wait for the 2010 version of the GTI. The exterior updates are "meh" for me, but they also updated the interior to be a little more luxurious (quieter cabin, updated dash, etc...) and it's getting a limited slip differential.
If you haven't already seen this, Top Gear had a nice review of the GTI when it first came out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7c0NzOWb23w
And Fifth Gear did a review of the improvements on the new 2010 GTI:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fximoEOhL4
Hope this helps! thanks for the reviews. this does help.
so it should be said i wouldn't be looking at a GTI if it didn't come in a 4-door, and it does seem close in so many ways to the V50. my old 97 GTI had more headroom then my V50, and although it was shorter overall, I could fit more cargo in the GTI. i think this is due to the wagon of my Volvo seems to have a shorter height opening than the GTI hatch.
also, i meant FWD above, not AWD. i hear the AWD is much smoother, and my combination is a little harsh.
i am thinking of the DSG transmission. i heard it's super efficient.
thanks again.

Yes, and Also - this - * Should Happen * I read this News Article .
* The Volvo C30 hatchback hasn't faired well since its introduction. Despite sharing the same architecture as the Euro-Focus and Mazda3, as well as sporting some of the best-looking sheet metal in the segment, the C30 has been hampered by its high price and paltry power. That may change in next year when Volvo releases a limited run of 4,500 C30's packing the Focus RS' 300bhp, turbocharged 2.5-liter five cylinder. In addition to sitting on 20-inch wheels, gaining a few aero mods, bigger brakes and a pair of bolstered buckets, the hotter C30 will be packing a Haldex all-wheel-drive system that could make it one a serious contender in a segment dominated by Evos and STIs. There's no word on U.S. importation, but if Volvo knows what's good for it, we'll be able to put down a deposit this time next year.
