This morning I got in my car to go to work and the engine cranked slow like the battery was almost dead. I let it run a couple minutes, shut if off and it restarted OK. I drove Starbucks, to the gas station and it restarted just fine. Drove my 45 minutes to work, no problems. In the afternoon I went to the gym and noticed an odd whining noise. I stopped, popped the hood and smelled a slight electrical burning smell over near the alternator. After my workout I got in the car connected my OBD2 dongle and Dash Command. With the engine running 11V. When I got to the gate at work it 10.2V and lights started coming on (STC and then the Red triangle) along with Power System Service Needed. I made it to the parking lot. The power steering gave out right before I turned into the parking space. I had to help pull the window up, and shut it off.

I am so grateful to God that this didn't happen on I95.

Now to source an alternator... I have the 040122- VIN and it is a FoMoCo Denso 30667103. I was able to get one of these no problem from FCP Euro for my previous V50 back in 2016. However, now I don't see any Denso but only Bosch. I seem to recall a connector difference between the Denso and Bosch. Is that still the case or does Bosch now make a plug-n-play version?

I'd contact FCP and I bet they can get a likewise replacement. They are pretty good about that.

I can't confirm or deny the connector on the only Bosch they have listed, but you are right that they had different connectors.

Edit: revised misunderstanding

You need to check your alternator plug - one is a dummy for pins 1-3 and 2 goes to the harness, whereas the other kind - all 3 go straight to the harness.

That will drive what you need - I had a dummy between pins 1 and 3 (loop of wire connecting them) - FCP Euro got me what I needed lickety split - ordered the one below:

Here is what FCP Euro says for your VIN double check I'm right:

That is the one I ordered from FCP Euro this morning based on my VIN. I saw 3 wires going to mine but didn't notice if it is a loop on 1 and 3. Was your original a Denso 30667103?

According to FCP Euro, the Denso replacement is no longer available and was replaced by a Bosch. They have 2 different Bosch alternators, one for chassis -040122 and one for 040123-. It sounds like I probably got the right one.

I picked my alternator up on Rock Auto for around 300$ after the core charge. It’s a Denso unit and has worked flawlessly

Rock Auto is showing out of stock on the Denso. It seems like they are hard to come by now. Hopefully the Bosch will be a direct replacement.

If you're after some choices, here is a list I threw together while searching for alternators, ended up with a DAN1059 (new) for about $250 USD shipped from UK to AUS in less than 3 days

They had a 15% off when I purchased

Mine just went bad a couple weeks ago. I went to Autozone and bought what they said they had, and I'm pretty sure they carried a Denso. It plugged right up.

Edit: It sold for $278 with $40 core charge

I almost bought one from them but they couldn't tell me which chassis numbers it fit or what brand, just that it fit a 2005 S40/V50. It sound like a crap shoot. I guess you got lucky.

I hoped mine would arrive today so I could install it tomorrow. Since it won't arrive until tomorrow, I'm kind of screwed because my schedule is jam packed. Maybe I should have risked Auto Zone.

I got a bad one from there. If you have the 1 wire to harness plug type on the Alternator - that wire just communicates with the ECM and tells it the voltage it's got. The alternator itself is self-regulating and I drove mine for a week like that waiting for my one from FCP to come in. Exactly 2 minutes after startup you'll get the red triangle of death, but you've got constant and good power so it's worthwhile if you're in a pinch. When mine from FCP Euro showed up I installed it and returned the Autozone one - either they gave me one for the 3 wire harness connector (not self regulating, but given the vin split being in the 40,000 mark, low chance of that being the case), or the part that comm's with the ECM was dead (much more likely given it's condition in the box). Either way Kept at 14.2-14.6v and everything working for that week.

Ugggg! Everything seemed fine all week commuting back and forth to work everyday but tonight my battery is down again. I haven't had time to look into it much yet but the battery was down to 10.2V with engine OFF. With the engine running it is 14.2V, so the alternator seems to be working. I do have an AGM battery which can be a little funny recharging when they get low. It is less than a year old but I'm wondering if it could be bad.

My battery charger doesn't do AGM batteries. Tomorrow I'm going to get a new charger and see if it charges up.

This morning the battery was 10.2V again. I got it started and drove a for a about 5 miles monitoring the voltage. It held between 13.8V and 14.2V.

The battery is less than a year old. It is an AGM and can be reluctant to take a charge when they get very low. I picked up an AGM compatible charger and am topping the battery off. Then I’ll check to see if it drains overnight.

I think the alternator is ok but the battery may have a bad cell or I have a parasitic load pulling the battery down. With an ammeter, I measured the parasitic load to be 0.1A.
