I'm in the market for new tires and placed an order for the Pirelli Scorprion AS3 Plus to replace Prielli Verde All season that came with my 2017 T6AWD with 20" wheels. I picked them based on the snow/wet ratings and ride comfort/noise. Unfortunately Tire Rack just called me to inform me they won't be available till April! ([email protected] supply chain!).

Now that I'm back on the hunt, I'm looking at the Vredestein Quatrack Pro or Michelin Cross Climate SUV respectively. Would like some feedback based on individual experiences. Thanks!

I don’t own a XC90 (yet), but we have the Michelin Cross Climates and we love them! Quiet, excellent in the snow (it is snow rated), and our fuel economy has returned great results for a 2017 CR-V.

This thread should be useful. We have the Michelin Pilot Sport AS3 on the 2017's 20 inch wheels. They're coming up to about 40k miles now. They still have lots of life left. They're quieter and easier to balance than the Pirelli's. They are currently smoother at highway speeds than my 2021 with the factory Pirelli's.

My two cents: don’t use “all season” tires if you expect to do any snow/cold weather driving. Go with something marketed “all weather” and properly mud/snow rated. In my experience, all season tires are typically a 3-season tire as far as actual cold weather performance and often are not even rated as an “approved traction device” if you live in areas where such regulatory things make the difference between crossing a mountain pass with chains or not (like here in WA). Unfortunately all season tires typically use harder rubber compounds compared to snow tires and lose most of their grip once temperatures drop.

My personal recommendations are the Toyo Celsius CUV or Nokian WR G4 SUV. Both are properly capable on snow and ice (though obviously a tad less than a dedicated snow tire) and do well on our cars — have the Celsius on my ol ‘04 and the Nokian WR G4 on our 2013 VW Touareg TDI with the 20” wheels, so I know the latter come in a size that will fix the XC90! Both are pretty quiet tires which also do especially well in rain.

Where do you live? Do you do a lot of driving in the snow? If so, you may want to consider "all weather" tires. They will give you much better winter traction than all-season tires.

Edit: Looks like @Swaybars beat me to the punch. :)

I have Vredestein on my XC90, great tires. I've been to ski areas at least 10 times and they performed great even in deep snow. On dry they work flawlessly as well.

Another for for Vredestein Quatrac Pro. I have them on my S60 and they are very good in the snow and ice. Nokian WRG4 on my wife's XC70 are also excellent. Note these are ALL WEATHER, which is different than all season

Hell yea, finally a thread that gets it right - screw this "all season" garbage. Those tires should not exist. Bad in summer, bad in winter.

Sporting Hakkapeliitta R3s on my current SUV. Just came back from Colorado in some of the worst weather I have driven in. Saw all sorts of SUVs with all season tires, and the occasional Subaru, getting towed up Rabbits' Ears pass.

Scorpion Verdi Plus II will be my choice when its time. Great on my ML350 and had Scorpion Plus (non-2s) on my 2017 XC90. Fan of both but they don't make them for 21 inch wheels.

Nokian WR G4, all we run in our XC's year round and started with the WRG2's.
We live in Wisconson and these are as good as any other dedicated snow tire except for the Nokian HAKKAS.
Best tire for snow I have ever run including Gislaved and Bridgestone.

That's how I feel about "mild hybrid" - its garbage but many shoppers get tricked into it (glorified stop-start with a bit of e-push. But I won't vent again here... or maybe I just did?)

In my mind, "all season" really means "all temperature". So you can use them in cold and they won't turn into hockey pucks like summer tires, nor will they melt in summer like winter tires. But you want better performance actually driving through winter conditions, go with "all weather". And of course dedicated winters are best for harsh conditions.

I've been strictly Nokian WR SUV over the years, now on G4. Some other brands also offer "3PMSF M+S" (Vredestein, Michelin, etc.), go w/ one of those if you don't want a 2nd set of wheels/tires.

For you and anyone else that went with the Vredestein's... how is the gas mileage overall at cruising speed? Any change? The Pirelli's on my 2021 will make it well past 50k miles at this point, but I'm trying to get more feelers out there for when the time comes. The Pilot Sport AS3/AS4 are virtually unavailable for the 21 inch wheels unless I up the ratio to 45. Since I'm in Phoenix, there's a lot more highway driving. I go through mountains and gravel roads commonly, but not enough off road/snow to require anything rated M+S. I noticed the OEM Pirelli's have the M+S rating and I've averaged 24.4 mpg for the past 24k miles.
