Re: Alarm System Service Required?!?! Really?! (GAS60RMAN)

I've seen a lot of the alarm modules faulty. Either internal faults or the batteries in them go bad. Batteries are not replaceable.
Re: Alarm System Service Required?!?! Really?! (Oceans60R)

That is a first for me. Then again, people have issues with aftermarket alarms all the time, but they just stop working. At least the car is letting you know it's toast.
Re: Alarm System Service Required?!?! Really?! (GAS60RMAN)

Most likely a battery failure.

The alarm module has an internal rechargeable battery, that is used to power an alarm, (not the horn), in case there is an intrusion, and regular battery fails, or is cut.

I believe the module is located in the right front fender well area. It is not servicable by Volvo, but others have removed it and replaced the battery. I can not locate the thread that discusses this, it may not have been in the "R" forum.

Battery in alarm module leaks. That's how to replace it.

I have read reports of this taking down sunroof power/control.
Indeed when the moduel( aka the siren) fails it will also take the sunroof with it. The suroof and siren are on the K-link line together this is why they both go out at the same time
Re: (StarmanDXE)

StarmanDXE,
Thanks for the link. I have not had this occur yet but with 130K on my 2005 V70R I have to think this is in my future.

Re: (rogersampson)

Mine has this issue. Tells me to check the alarm every time I turn it on ever since I got the car. Going on 7 months now and I don't even notice anymore! It's kinda nice, actually. If I do something stupid, the lights blink, but the horn doesn't blare

But... The electronics for my sunroof still work. (The mechanics are another story...
But, if I had a say in the matter, the stupid thing wouldn't have existed to begin with!

Re: (StarmanDXE)

Yeah it drives me crazy, bc the sunroof will not open at all... This car is probably one of the worse things I have purchased EVER. I have had this thing in the shop atleast 4 times in the last 6 months... Angle gear blew up, DEM module went bad, from sway bar went out... Control arm bushings replaced... Its never ending... I need to get rid of this junk... Hell by the time I get done fixing everything it will be a brand new car practically... Thanks for the insight though...
The UEM controls the moonroof and to reset it try locking/unlocking the doors like three times in succession.

As for the alarm module, yet its battery is replaceable. I used a pair of 3.6V 700mAh NiMH cordless phone batteries wired in series to rebuild the module in the S80 with great success.
Re: (Dextrobrick)

the alarm on my R was going off randomly over the weekend. and i've been getting this message ever since. on sun, i tried to use my sunroof because it was hot out but it wouldnt function. i thought maybe the sunroof fuse was bad. i guess my alarm module is bad?
Re: Alarm System Service Required?!?! Really?! (GAS60RMAN)

Yeah it happens alot. If you want to use your sunroof pull fuse 38. thats a temporary fix untill you can get a new battery or w.e. you need.

Re: (atacamaR)

I paid almost $400 to replace the alarm module (part and install) at the stealer. Heck my 1992 Audi S4 alarm still works while my 05 Volvo need new module right after the warranty expired?!??! Plus it looks like this problem is not that uncommon. . . . .
Re: (atacamaR)

Cost me $150 to replace the siren myself using instructions at Mathew's site, linked to above. I think parts.com jacked up their prices a bit since then though.
Re: (Crito)

Our Saab 9-5 had a very similar alarm module failure (with SERVICE THEFT ALARM on the info display), which led to the alarm blaring uncontrollably (and unable to turn off), it's a common failure on those cars.

Nice to know I can look forward to a similar joyful experience with the R at some point in the future.
