As I was inflating my daughter's monstrosity of a baby pool over the weekend, I decided to pop the hood of the R to remove the 'sock' on my air filter out of sheer curiosity.
I wasn't expecting to gain anything in terms of noticeable power or noise, which is good because I wasn't disappointed! lol
Anyway, I thought I recalled some people saying they could "hear their turbo better" (not that I was going after this effect) but I'm not sure if it was just a placebo effect. I certainly can't hear anything that sounds like a diverter valve and absolutely (thankfully) nothing like a true BOV. In fact, I didn't notice any audible difference at all. I don't know, maybe my allergies are clogging up my ears too much...lol
-Eric

you can hear the diverter valve if you pay close enough attention, even with the stock filter and sock installed. if you still dont believe it, spool up the turbo next to a concrete median at an on/off ramp to a highway

My point is just that removing the sock doesn't seem to make a difference in sound.
-Eric

Re: (Warpedcow)

After doing the JRL mod the turbo is much easier to hear when the windows are down. I just wish I could hear it when the windows are up. I've ridden in my friend's stock WRX and it sounds like the turbo is in the glove box.

If you install a CAI at the same time, you will definitely hear the turbo better. What is cool, is sound comes out on driver side, so with window down, you really hear it well, especially when going through guard gate, driving alongside concrete divider or through underpass.

Build some boost in first gear and them let off the gas quickly, you'll hear it big time.
LTA
Re: Air Filter Less "Sock"... (LTA)

The sound was heard after cutting the bottom out of the Air filter box on Billy's car. The turbo recycles its BO back into that location so you would hear the sound of the stock BO when despooling. It also creates more airflow through the system and releases a pressure vacuum that is create in the stock system.
I have not done this mod yet because of fear of water splash / hydrolock.

If you really want to hear the turbo, knock the seal up the steering column where it passes out of the car. Ask anyone who's had this happen during a front sway bar install.
It will sound like it's sitting in your lap.

lol i can hear the turbo spooling fine with the windows down.
i was driving on rt 78 last weekend...and there's an area where they're doing construction, and they've reduced the highway to one lane and put up like 5-6ft walls on either side (it's kinda trippy to drive through). In 4th gear going 40-50 mph i could hear the turbo when i goosed it - as well as a "tssssssss" noise when i let off the throttle - i'm assuming that's the diverter.

I never noticed any difference either but it seems that it can only help, then add the Kelly CAI and you will notice a big difference
