I'm looking for a nice aftermarket roof rack for my 2001 V70 to carry my bikes. I do NOT have the Volvo factory roof rack rails on my car. Has anyone had success installing a Yakima, Thule, or other rack in this scenario? If so, which specific rack parts you used? Yakima and Thule have yet to publish their suggestions for this scenario.
Any insight is greatly appreciated!
Best, Brian

I have the best insight for you:
Volvo load bars.
Seriously. They are made by Thule, and the MSRP on them is a good $50 less than any generic product you will get from Thule or Yakima (plus, as you have found, neither company offers anything yet). The Volvo bars are designed specifically for your car, and lock on in the slickest fashion. Nothing touches any exposed paint. They are simply the slickest rack I have ever used on any vehicle. Nothing is left on the roof when they are removed, and it takes all of 20 seconds to install/remove them.
I think we had a thread with pictures before. I'll see if I can locate it.
- Darell

Darren,
The load bars look like a good option to consider...thank you. Where can I purchase them...somewhere on the web or do I have to go through my dealer? Also, do the cross beams come with the towers? If not, what size do you recommend?
Thanks! -Brian

Darrel and I had an informative an off-forum conversation. Here are the highlights:
+ Load bars come with "towers" and "cross bars" as a single unit; no need to determine cross bar width.
+ Load bars can be purchased at any Volvo dealer. Retail is between $125-$150. Might be able to find a deal near $100.
+ Load bars are square (like Thule), but both Thule and Yakima accessories will fit
with appropriate (often included) adapters.

Oops. And one more thing I should mention is that those pictures I put up with the kayaks show my customized bars. I put longer Yakima round bars on the factory towers (not easy...had to drill the rivets and new bars with everything lined up perfectly, and re-bolt). The factory bars end at the towers, and do not extend beyond like in my pictures (and is why I had to modify them - to get the room for two kayaks).
Hope I didn't screw anybody up.
- Darell
