Aftermarket radio with steering wheel controls.

So first off, I did a lot of searching on this subject, but all I could find is 'it doesn't exist anymore' on threads that are 5+ years old, I then hit Google, and couldn't turn anything up.

The reason I want to do this, is because my radio volume control doesn't work, and my roomate just recently purchased a RX8, and the radio he got Kenwood Xcelon DMX905s, along with a CANbus adapter and OBD2 port adapter, so he has android auto, as well as a 'gauge' panel on the radio to display coolant temp/IAT/etc etc. I really don't want to give up steering wheel volume control, but I will if I have to. Price is also not a concern, if I have to spend 2-300$ for the adapter, that's perfectly fine, I just can't seem to find one.

[Edit]: I found this but I'm not sure if it's the right one.

There are a number of members that have used the CRUX SWRVL-54 unit. Do a search through the threads. I was planning on using it for mine, but decided to go with the Bluepower unit some time ago.

Only unfortunate thing is the crux can't relay obd2 data, and I'm not sure how else to hook it up to the radio so, meh. Ah well.

Yes, use the Crux adapter, it works great, highly recommended. The Axxess ASWC-1 is your only other option that works with these cars outside of making a custom CAN interpreter (which there are a few projects of out there using Arduinos), but the Crux is pre-integrated to the wiring harness adapter that you'll need anyway. Get the Crux, get a double-DIN adapter, get a radio antenna adapter, your choice of aftermarket stereo and you're set, all steering wheel controls will work great. You just match the labeled wires on the Crux to the corresponding wires on your radio and use crimp connectors to make a secure connection. You'll have to do some version of this step for any aftermarket stereo, regardless of whether you use an adapter or not.

Note you will lose use of your park assist sensors if you have them, and the cubby/cupholder/whatever next to your stereo will be gone as well. As far as I've found, the iDataLink software (used to show the gages you mention on Kenwood and maybe other units) does not support a P2 Volvo, I know I looked when I put a Kenwood in my car last year and came up empty (support is better for other makes and particularly 2008+ cars).

Dang. I guess another option is to find a double din that supports phone screen mirroring, then I can just use Torque and mirror my phone. Gotta see if that Kenwood unit supports it.

Thanks for the Crux recommendation though, that alleviates a lot of 'what ifs'!

Another vote for the axxess aswc1. Works fine with pioneer/Kenwood decks with remote inputs. Has a wee bit of lag but I literally use it everyday

Don’t know how you want to do the torque app thing but android unit with phone mirroring is your ticket. I use the double din to play dvd for the kids.

Since the idea of Android units has been brought up along with retaining steering wheel controls, anybody have any recommendations or feedback, good and bad, with possible Androids that could be used for a good R audio upgrade? Or am I just asking for trouble by asking?

Cheers,

Bill

I put an ATOTO in my XC90 that I bought from eBay. Full Android with mirroring, works great. I had to integrate the steering controls with an Axxess unit, even though the Atoto has a plethora of Android SWC control functions and two hook-up methods, two wire and plug-in. It's been a few months, so there may be software updates or mods available from Atoto, now. I haven't checked. They have a semi-useful installation forum that's not real easy to navigate. The head unit is beautiful in that there's no wasted real estate on knobs and such, the down side being that the buttons and touch controls are a bit small, but you get used to it. Another feature the rig has is dual Bluetooth, so your OBD device can be plugged in and running full time, and still groove with Pandora through the phone BT. I installed the mirroring app and tried it out, but it's not something I use every day, but the BT with Pandora is. There's a shed-load of features on the thing that you won't find on others, like four USB's, front camera, back-up camera, DVR capability, and probably some I forgot.

That link got buggard. Mind posting it again?

I ok I found it, awesome. A cool thing is that's its android so I should be able to side load any android app I want.

So that head unit, and the axxess or crux unit for steering wheel controls?

IMSO - PUT IN A BACK-UP CAM.

It has been the best mod that I've done besides a good double din itself.

www.cruchfield.com is another source for adapters that work with the P2R.

Love my Kenwood with backup cam in my V70R and the steering wheel controls work well and are very responsive with the Axxess ASWC-1.

Yes, you can treat it like any Android device for app loading, and select the apps that are available on your phone for mirroring. The thing has a remote WIFI antenna, but I'm not close enough to pick it up. But then, I did bury it in the dash I installed the Atoto in a double din Metra face plate only, doing my own bracketing. The double DIN box mount does not come with the Atoto, and I hear that a standard DD box doesn't fit it. Cheaper and better, this way:)
I had trouble getting the Axxess to work for SWC, but finally got through to Axxess for tech support. The Tech moaned about the Atoto being difficult to integrate on my application, but he steered me in the right direction, and it works great. My wheel only has >>, <<, and volume up and down, but it all works, advancing the Pandora selections and sound up and down. Eventually, AXXess will update their software and it will be plug-n-play with all eBay radios.
I have zero complaints or problems with my gear.
If I could post pictures; I would.

So my car has an AMP. Do I need something else to retain the Amp? I'm about to pull the trigger on everything and I just wanna make sure I get everything.

@capndirk: any long term review on your Atoto A6 since your above post? Does the unit really boot up in 2 seconds? Any battery drain? Is your Atoto wired to the factory amp?

I've been wanting to install the OEM sub in my V70R but they are hard to find and pricey. I've been reading about the newer 12" spare tire subs from Cerwin Vega and JBL. Getting good reviews in the forums and priced at $299 about the same as a good used OEM sub. I think these 2 subs would be a good alternative if we can tap into the factory wiring for the OEM sub to hook up with the CW or JBL sub. Plus it would be a cinch to install - just drop into the spare tire, secure it with the screw-down bar/plate and connect the wires.

The ATOTO is great! I'm surprised at how good the sound is, especially given that I listen to Pandora almost 100% of the time. If I listen to my Reggae station on Pandora (Peter Tosh), the bass on a lot of those tunes really thump in a good way. No extra amplifiers, just the out-of-the-box Atoto A6. One reason I bought the thing is that it has reasonable power output. Everything goes to the stock speaker wires taken from the amp back to the head unit. The amp won't talk to anything to control power, balance, etc, so it just fills the hole under the seat.
There is a detectable boost in sound quality if I play FLAC files from my phone, but that's as it should be. I was something of an audiophile in my younger days, so I have an idea of what I'm missing from streaming sources, but I'm really happy with what I have. The eBay back-up license plate light replacement camera is a CCD, and the picture is really good. I really don't gadgeteer all that much, so a lot of the Android functionality goes un-explored, though I have run with a BT Canbus adapter reading on the second BT channel. It worked fine along with the BT music stream at the same time.
The worst thing I could say about it is that the screen doesn't work with Polarized lenses, so I flip my shades up when backing or if I want to see who's doing the tune. Non-polarized UVA-UVB are the way to go for touring. Around town and daily driving it's just not a biggie.
Look up the features on the thing, you'll be amazed.
About the boot: Yes, there is an almost immediate visible screen. Mine is always on the BT page, and appears right away. It does take a very short period of time for the phone and Atoto to find each other, and then I have to select music mode. Once paired, phone is default, but music has to be selected. I would be happier if it just did the handshake and started playing music, but a really small price to pay, I think.
