I have looked at and driven a 1995 850 T-5R with 113,000 miles at a dealer (used car lot). There are some issues that concerns me quite a lot including:
- Major noise coming from right front when driving the car on uneven pavement - dealer claims it's the shocks and that they could be replaced cheaply (but still hasn't had it done himself).
- Service light is on - there are no records whatsoever and thus no way to tell how overdue the service is, or is there?
- Trunk lid dampeners are broken.
- Right front and rear doors including frame have been repainted.
- Driver seat back rest tilt is not working.
Carfax shows three southern California owners, no salvage title, and no major accidents.
Interior and exterior are in good condition. The air conditioning is ice-cold. As far as I can tell the engine runs well (I have an S60T5 and have previously owned an 850T-5) and the car is great fun to drive.
The dealer asks $6500 pretty much firm, claiming that the car is in such perfect and drivable condition which I do not really agree with. He offers no warranty, and says he would never do that on this particular model. Is the price fair or should I stay away?
- Major noise coming from right front when driving the car on uneven pavement - dealer claims it's the shocks and that they could be replaced cheaply (but still hasn't had it done himself).
sounds about right, just an excuse to upgrade/drop the car
- Service light is on - there are no records whatsoever and thus no way to tell how overdue the service is, or is there?
just do all the basic maintenance anyway. I.E. oil change, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, filters, etc.... at this time do all vacuum lines also
- Trunk lid dampeners are broken.
easy fix. the shocks/dampeners are available for about 30 bucks, i think. Check with FCP Groton or your local Volvo Dealer
- Right front and rear doors including frame have been repainted.
ask about the accident... if the driver doesn't know, take the car to an autobody shop and another shop for eval. the extra 75-150 bucks is worth it.
- Driver seat back rest tilt is not working.
seat back cable is broken, the fix is cheap if you do it yourself, and takes about an hour or two if you have needle nose pliers, wire cutters, and some other tools to remove the leather cover and gain access to the cable itself.
the price is EH for that much needed maintenance. Ask him to fix all those little things and sell at that price, or knock off 1000 or 2000 and do it all yourself. Only questionable item there is the body damage/fix.
BTW, if you decide you'll do what Doug has done to his 850, all those items don't mean jack anyway. Ask for a price reduction and have at the car. good luck.

Re: Advice on 850T-5R (svensk)

Nothing wrong with a car that old having paint work. What IS wrong is that you noticed it easily.
Is there overspray or a tape line?
Everything else is basic mantenance.
The noise could either be a strut mount or just a bad sway bar link

Re: Advice on 850T-5R (JRL)

Thanks for the info. I really appreciate your fast reply.
There is a tape line along the upper door frame along both doors, and there is overspray on the door rubber lining.
The front fender looks like it's the original. The seams are straight and the bolts look untouched.

Well, if it matches and the rest of the car seems OK, (and you like it) ask them at least do some of this work
The front end work and the seat cable (or motor) which can be a real PIA
You can service it, then you know it was done right and do the (easy) trunk struts)
AND HAVE THE CAR CHECKED OUT

After some negotiating I managed to get the price down to 5500. So now I'm the new owner of a 1995 850 T-5R and yes it's yellow!
I've had it checked and it turns out that it needs a new spring seat at the right front wheel. I'll have that taken care of soon. The other minor issues I'll take care of as time and money permits.
Thanks to all of you who replied with valuable input.
