Adventures in "R" lighting (lots of pics)

Ok here it goes...
First I got these ($7.99 each, http://www.autobarn.com item DES20706):

And replaced one on the left, MUCH brighter, more than makes up for lost 8% illumination with tail light tint:

Then I got these ($19.95 each, http://www.autobarn.com item SYLH3STBP):

And replaced one on the right. NOTE how it matches Xenon in color:

It illuminates like this, noticeably brighter:

From the driver's perspective:

Then I got these ($760 + $70 install each) PN 30698819:

Major differences are this true halogen high beam (Xenon still elevates as booster):

Versus this DRL:

This stylish side light (with an additional 5 watt white "City" light in turn signal enclosure that you can't see, but seems to functions like a DRL).

Versus this amber horror:

On the car in the day (shut up about the moose, 5" was all they had):

High beams MUCH brighter as you can imagine with another 110 watts of pure Halogen with a polished reflector lighting the way. High beams are tied to xenons though, so they point up higher than I would like since my Xenons are adjusted up. Oh well, still much better.
Next installment in my "Adventures"....
This time we are changing the orange turn signal bulb for a Philips Silvervision I got at http://www.powerbulbs.com, getting rid of the "yolk" effect.

Before

After

Powerbulbs sent a FREE 5 Philips Blue Vision W5W city light, that I installed with the Silvervision.

I also installed the Silverstar Highbeam H7s

and the other Silverstar Fog H3 so all lights match Xenons in color. http://www.autobarn.com
Update:
Added the euro spec software that allows the fog lights to stay on with high beams. One tech said it couldn't be done, but I knew he was lying because 1) he is a total wanker 2) others had it done. So I went to another dealer and got it installed no problem.
P/N for S60R: 8619398
P/N for V70R: 9499585-9

BTW, because the xenons rotate up, you are not violating U.S. law that says you are only supposed to have 4 forward lights if you keep your fog lights on. Technically, I am because I high beams, xenons and fogs, but this would only apply to the 3 people in the U.S. that have Euro head lights.
NEW INFO:
I have the correct software to disable '04 R DRLs.
Part # 30765420 EU LIGHT, NO DRL
My tech stayed late yesterday to find it, and had to haggle with someone to let him download it, but he did.
After 4 years of DRL Bulb failure message, I'm finally free.
BTW, if you don't want to spend the $ (cost me $26) for the software, you can do exactly what Stagg suggested and cover sensor (under vent man) with tiny piece of black electrical tape and set DRL setting to FlexStd in VIDA (that may cost you $ as well though).

what you need is:
HID kits for boost beam and fogs
relay mod to keep the fogs on
and 50W ballasts all around.
the 50W ballast boosts output to about 4500 lumens from 3200
4500*6= 27,000 lumens!

kidding of course!

You will get a "DRL light bulb burned out" error message one time, just clear that. But we can't get this download in the USA, right? Are they letting you apply this software to a US spec car because you're in Germany?

I hadn't heard that, you can get other European software (e.g. all doors unlock on one push, lights flash twice on unlock). I have only heard people not do this because:
1 - dealer couldn't order headlights
2 - headlights are very expensive
3 - in the US, roads are well lit / have reflectors so additional high beams aren't as cricitcal.
4 - people came up with fog-light work arounds for additional high-beam lighting.
That leaves you with a $1700 cosmetic upgrade if you don't need additional light.
Glad I could make your day! I take it your USAF? My father was retired 0-6 USAF and my brother and I did tours with him on every SAC/TAC/ADC base in the free-world it seems.
I want those lights still!
BTW Got an e-mail from BMW, I should be able to "order" my M5 in October. Still waiting to hear what ///M color will beoffered to BMWNA, hoping Estoril Blue is on the list. But since I'm leasing it I imagine TiSilver/Black will be the call.

Re: Adventures in "R" lighting (JRL)

Weather in Holland today is gloomy, grey, rainy and I'm a little hung over from a night on the town last night... but this thread could not have come at a better time
Here's a question though; when it comes time for you to go back to the U.S. Kelly, aren't you gonna have issues getting through port since you don't have amber reflectors?

Re: Adventures in "R" lighting ("R" Kelly)

I thought it was highway code to have some kind of amber light on the front or red light at the rear, but both had to be on the side of the car, which is why all US spec cars have that. I noticed it for the first time when I had a US spec SRT-4 a few years ago, it has amber side markers, but in Europe, Chrysler Neons have a plastic cover in it's place. In the US, the older model Volvo S40 and V40 have amber side markers on the front and red on the rear, but in here they are both amber. I'm guessing that they are pretty strict.
So I'm guessing that when it comes to shipping your car back, it will go through some kind of inspection since you've been abroad for quite some time.
