I just got pulled over for having a tail light out. I had my rear fog light on and the trooper didn't understand that the car only comes with one. 25 minutes later I was on my way without a ticket. A bit frustrating though. I'd like to prevent this in the future. Has anyone added a 2nd rear fog light to their XC90? Mine is an 08. Is there a socket in the empty housing?

I've wondered the same thing! It bothers me that it only came with one. I know the 2013+ tail lights have a wire leading down to where the fog lamp would connect, but there is no fog light to connect to. My thought was to take the left fog light and plug it into the right wire. The housings seem to be identical, so that would mean you would just have to order the left fog lamp and flip it over. Assuming the right wire is powered (I don't know why it wouldn't be). The right "housing" is actually just a reflector and does not have a socket or wires.

There is only one rear fog light, on the drivers side, to indicate the passing edge of the vehicle for drivers approaching from behind in poor visibility.

I've got a problem with my fog light.. When I turn it on, all my tail lights go out lol.. I haven't looked at it yet so I don't know what's going on back there. And my bumper light goes out I have to kick it sometimes to get rid of the notification on the dash. I'll get around to it one of these days.

The slot for a right rear fog light is there; just run a wire from the left side to the right, install a light bulb and you will be in business.

Still, I would not do it if I were you. It defeats the reason why there should only be one fog light.

Haha maybe your Icarsoft will tell you what's wrong, might even fix it with the reset!

Lol you never know with these things! You should see the amazing time I'm having with my 06 s40 that's acting like a car that's been flooded with lava straight from the pits of hell.

I take it you're referring to the misfire/fuel/starting issue? I've been watching your thread... I'm curious.

Yeah it's crazy. I can't narrow it down at all. We drove the car 30 miles to my gf's cousins house tonight, so putting 60 on it and I'll scan it tonight when we get home and see if it threw any new codes. It didn't start again at the store after parking it for 20 minutes, had to try it a 2nd time. Anyways, hopefully it dies and I can find out what's wrong, or something else happens that narrows it down.

Did you end up getting a good scanner? Your thread actually partially prompted me to get an ELM 327 wifi OBD2 dongle and the Dashcommand app for then I eventually run into a problem with my cars (so far, knock on wood, nothing). This way I can also baseline both of my cars now when they are healthy and have a control to compare against when something gets wonky.

I got the volvo icarsoft scanner. I can read all the car modules independently. It's infinitely more useful than a generic odb2 because I'm getting access to many many things that the generic just can't access. The generic ones are good for the basics like some check engine lights and, o2 sensors, maf.. But it can't read the service codes for low differential fluid or inter module connectivity.

Ah nice, sounds like it plays with the CAN not just the OBD-II aspect. Like a partial DiCE unit or something. Neat.

For future reference: If you wish to add a RH (passenger) rear fog light in North America, order:
The harness - 8693010 - https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/products/Volvo/Lamp-socket/1161648/8693010.html
and
The housing with bulb hole - 30784134

I'm having a hard time finding 30784134 in the North American parts system. Only a RH (passenger) rear reflector shows up. I'll probably have to order it from eBay.

The only problem is the passenger side FOG does not have a hole for a bulb in it. Its sealed off so you will have to drill it out and mimick the shape of the other one and into it so that a bulb socket can lock in place. The rest should be simple.

I was toying around with the idea of doing this asap but we will see if I can find soem old sockets from the scrap yard and attempt to modify them.

You're totally right! I'm going to dremel out the hole first on my RH reflectorand see if I can make the harness fit.

Otherwise, you can order the "drivers side fog bulb housing" from a RH drive country and that does have the bulb hole.
I have a friend living in the UK who would pick one up for me.

We need 8693010 as that takes the H21W bulb vs the old 5W pre '07 bulb. I also am going to look if the circuit is designed to handle 2 bulbs installed at once - incase it only was ever designed to take one bulb (on the respected driver side). If there is a problem, we can just get LED H21W bulbs.

Great news! I discovered today if you Dremel out the plastic plug on the reflector side, underneath is the key way for the H21W bulb socket.
Below are some pictures of the right vs left (I'll take better pictures when I install the harness).
I've since further cleaned up the cut with a scalpel - locks into place perfect as does the O-ring.
All we have to do is order the harness 8693010 and a H21W bulb. Confirmed with a multimeter that both sides are energized when you press the rear fog button.

This picture shows how deep you should go so not to case damage. You can barely make it out - there are key ways identical to the NA drivers side fog lens. Be careful not to go too deep as you'll go into the hard clear plastic of the key way. It's better to clean things up with a scalpel. Another great aspect of this mod is that the left/right lenses have the same markings, so this is 100% road legal lens wise (it is also legal in Canada to have dual rear fogs):
