Re: Acura Cl 3.5 Conversion???? (anony00gt)
Actually it's just a stroke job bringing the current 3.2L up to 3.5L. It's offered by Rick Case Acura down in Florida for around $2500. You pretty much get a whole new top-end from what I hear which is nice because you can save the stock top-end or resell it and make back some of the cost.
It offers a boost to crank numbers of around 300hp/260torque, up from 260hp/232torque. Dyno graph is around somewhere in the bowels of acura-cl.com but I can't find it right now.
One guy who lives down in Florida just got it done and ran at a 1/8th mile track. His times equate to mid-to-high 13s in the quarter mile. I wish he'd just run a 1/4 mile instead of the wimpy 1/8th.
It's a sweet mod, and it puts the CLS up to a performance notch above any of the immediate competitors like the Maxima, G35, 330ci, or A4.
Doing it in conjunction with the usual bolt-ons (CAI, headers, and pulleys) should net some decent numbers.
The reason they didn't just use the 3.5L from the MDX or NSX is that they are a different style V6 (90degree V I believe, versus our 60degree V in the TL/CL) and the MDX in particular has weaker flow characteristics for the valves, etc, than just stroking the current fine-breathing J32A2.
The guy who had his done has the 5speed auto. I'd like to see a 6speed 2003 CLS with the 3.5L upgrade, bolt-ons, and Comptech supercharger and aftercooler. That's easily 12s, and with the right tuning, tires, and suspension setup, low 12s at the track.
Being FWD I don't think the CLS is worth making into a fast car. Mine has a lot of suspension work because it's fun through the twisties. I love the growl of the VTEC on my J32A2 though, and whatever car I get next I'm sure won't compare when it comes to the engine note (unless it's an inline turbo car because that's my favorite engine note).
