Greetings,
So my daughter rolls in last night to tell me her S60 has a ABS/Brake failure light on. I am into a bottle of wine so I told her I would look at it in the morning.
Car started fine, so I think the battery is ok. I drove off and within about 200 feet the ABS/Brake Failure lights come on. I get to the end of the block and it feels like the transmission will not allow power to the drive train. I drive slowly back to the house with lights on the panel flashing, engine sputtering and barely make it back to the casa. I am thinking all those symptoms are a failed ABS module. Any other ideas?
I am not a DIY mechanic (computer geek) so I was going to have the car towed to my Indie on Monday and see what they think. I found this http://www.modulemaster.com/en/index.php from another thread and will show it to my Indie, as I don't want to pay for a new part which is what he will want to do.
Thanks for any other suggestions.

How old is the battery? It could be the ABS, but it can also be too low battery voltage. Disconnect the battery, recharge overnight and that'll tell you.

Re: ABS Failure S60 issues (Mika)

Mika,
My first thought was the battery and I am sure it is at least 3-4 years old. However, when I went out to start the car, bam, started right up with no hesitation, so I kind of ruled the battery out.
Only other issue with the car I am aware of is the gradually degrading catalytic converter issue you and I confirmed. Car has had a CEL on since I last stopped by your place, but I attribute that to the cat issue I haven't fixed yet.
My regular Indie is real resistant to anything but Volvo parts, protocol and fees on fixing the car. I will call him Monday morning and see if he is open to the idea of doing the rebuild on the ABS module if that is what he thinks is wrong. If no way, (like on my cat issue) then a suggestion for another Volvo Indie shop in San Diego would be appreciated.
EDIT: Daughter just told me the car first gave her an "Over Voltage/Stop Safely warning". She stopped and restarted the car and then got a "Low Voltage warning. Then the Fan started to blow intermittently and different lights were flashing (ABS, Battery, and Traction Control) then it said "Brake Failure/Service Urgent" and the brakes were fine. So she drove home 10 miles to the above comments from me.
Battery is 24 months old and a 75 month Battery.
Thanks

Modified by surfsd at 12:13 PM 6-21-2009

Sounds like the voltage regulator or bad battery. The car can start just fine but the voltage can be too low for the computers. Anyway, this problem does not look too expensive one.
Reading the codes would not tell much in this situation. With supply voltage problems you get all kinds of ghost codes and problems that will go away when the supply is fixed.

All the advice here is pretty good, I would just add that in my experience there can be five things:
1. Battery (which you're getting looked at)
2. Voltage Regulator
3. Brake Control Module (BCM)
4. Engine Control Module (ECM)
5. Problem with the network wiring that connects the BCM, ECM and other parts (including on the pins that connect the modules to the network - apparently sometimes weather extremes can cause minor corrosion to build up which interferes with the signals)

As a non-Volvo-expert, I third the comment on the voltage regulator, or perhaps the whole alternator. Since your battery is getting charged, and sometimes the voltage is high and sometimes it's too low, that seems to point to the voltage regulator and not the whole alternator.
If your alternator is putting out weird or irregular voltage, all your voltage-dependent sensors will start to do wacky things.
You'll want to address this ASAP or you run the risk of overcharging/damaging your battery, or worse, sending a voltage spike through a very expensive computer module.
