As of a few days ago. my 2015.5 XC70 just started displaying this error message, or something to that effect. I'm presuming this is not a warrantee item and that I'm looking at a $1500 ish repair bill... Does that sound accurate? Also, do I need to take this to a Volvo dealer or is there a better route with an independent shop?

Also, I am presuming that I should avoid driving over 25 ish mph or driving in slippery conditions.

Thank you guys for any pointers!

It could be something as simple as a wheel speed sensor is failing, which is a $200 repair.

You need to read out the specific ABS code, in order to get to the root cause. The bootleg-pirated VIDA system does not work with your car. You're best choice is to take it to an authorized Volvo repair shop for a diagnosis.

Sounds like the start of a new club... 2015.5 XC 70 96,000 miles - SAME ISSUE. I also have a tire pressure warning. Started just today. Just starting research now. Is anyone further along with there research / resolution?

Just yesterday I set the tire pressures (all 4 tires were 1 to 1.5lbs. down) to recommended pressure.

And the verdict is...
The rear wheel sensors. Both left and right replaced.
$122.00 per sensor and $256.00 install (including diagnosis). $537.00 total.
The car is back to great again.

Just to re-cap the issue(s):
  • ABS Failure warning
  • ESC Failure warning
  • City Safe Failure warning
  • Tire Pressure warning
  • Right rear caliper would lock (pulse) if ESC was not turned off through infotainment system.

Mine is not resolved yet. Changed the speed sensor and code turn into left rear tone wheel failure. Cleaned tone wheel several times, but did not help. Am thinking of swapping the right rear speed sensor over to see what happens, before tackling the tone wheel/axle.

It probably is the BCM. The Volvo one's are not cheap. I'm doing it on my P2 here and luckily have a parts car with a good one. I don't see a 3rd party reman option on FCP Euro for yours, and they list the part at $2000 alone. On the P2 cars the failure point that seems to be common is bad solder joints, which would cause the symptoms you're describing of WSS not being read, among other possible outcomes based on which solder joints fail first. They can be repaired, which is what I plan to do with the bad one to keep as a spare. Not sure if that's an option on the P3 or not.

There was a video posted in 2015 on YT that shows a "newer Volvo ABS"... it's not a very good video frankly, no explanation and no identification of "newer". Just a part number on the box, but that might have been superseded. Anyhow on that one it looks like the joints are just compression so he just wiggled them all to re-establish contact. I'd think some deoxit would help too while you have it opened up.

Hi, has anyone here found a solution to the abs/esc problem? I understand there could be several reasons but today I got this error message and I am very distraught about it. The car has done 98,000 km and is an xc70 2015. Just had the tmap changed for the second time in less than a year in addition to changing the sensor on the radiator or intercooler. I have had so much bad luck with this car and have grown very tired of it. It is so expensive to have the car at a workshop in Norway. We had to cancel our holiday to the Alps with car and caravan in June because of the tmap error, and now we will try again in September. I will be so distraught if we have to cancel again. But I will probably end up taking the car into the Volvo workshop if they have time to look at it

replaced one sensor shortly after my first post, now other one(s) are bad too now I am presuming. Probably should have done them all the first time. Are there speed sensors in the front wheels? Speed sensors are wired, pressure sensors are battery, right? I am also getting a tire pressure monitoring system failure which started right after the first speed sensor was replaced... hope its not the BCM as stated

There will be speed sensors in the front wheels as well. I chased a problem there last summer in our 2011 XC70 T6. (I know because pressing the replacement bearing per Laser kit instructions didn’t seat the bearing in where it belongs and the sensor wasn’t reading the ring.)

Had a trip from MD to MI when the same problem arose. Wasn’t able to get it looked at till weeks later, and I can vouch, it’s definitely a progression of issues.

First day
  • ABS/ESC Failure
  • Transmission Service notification
  • City safety failure
  • Collision Warning failure

About a week in
  • Current MPG counter didn’t work
  • HARSH shifting from 1st to 2nd. Geartronic forgot it existed. Sometimes would go into limp mode, locked at 30ish mph and below.
  • Sluggish shifting overall

Learned from this thread that a broken speed sensor might be the issue—and it was! Cheap enough fix, but really disturbing that failure of such a part affects so much, especially the transmission. Thanks yall!

I have a similar issue with my 2014 Volvo v60 D6. It showed "ABS/ESC Failure service required" on the dash. Along with some knocking when turning at low speeds and a grinding sound when driving. So I am guessing that the abs wheel sensor is faulty and breaking on the front right wheel even though I'm not sliding or anything. Either that or a wheel-bearing that is FUBAR. I did not need these problems 😅
