ABS/DTCS Major problem?

My 04 T5 with 30K really failed on me yesterday. I thought I was going to have to be flat bedded, but luckily I got it working.
Here is what happend. I was driving at highway speed and I got two messages; Anti skid not working and ABS not working braking assist service required or something to that affect, no ABS idiot light). I have had that before and when turning off car it reset and everything worked right. (I have had the dealer look at that, but they said it was ok?). So I turned off the car and came back 1/2 hour later hoping it would reset, nope.
This is where the problem got worse. I started the car and started driving and the ABS brakes activated them self non stop with out my foot on the brake! Then the DTCS started going off to the point where the car would barely move and the ABS idiot light came on solid. So I shut off te and restarted the car, got the same messages and ABS light on. So I turned off DTCS and the car was drivable without the ABS and DTCS going off. What a mess!
I have had it with my current dealer's service. I have the creaking chassis that they can not fix. I just took it in for the 30K on June 1st and told them about the recall tie rod campaign. They said they could not fix the tie rod as they have not been officially notified of the problem or approved repair from Volvo. I also have some kind of power steering noice/problem they can not find or fix. I also think I have a bad wheel bearing they could not hear and would not fix
So there is my rant for today!

Re: ABS/DTCS Major problem? (safetyfirst)

I had the same thing happen to me last year. It's a long story, but the short of it was that the dealer had to replace the yaw sensor computer which is located in the center console under the cup holder. It took four trips to fix it. They kept doing a computer reset, re-loading the software for the computer, wheel alignment......went on and on. The replacement computer part ($600 for the part) fixed it. Guess they wanted the "cheapest" fix, so they tried all the other quick fixes first.

Re: ABS/DTCS Major problem? (alj)

An update, dropped off car today and took a test drive with head mechanic.
He possibly thinks the ABS/DTCS/wheel bearing could all be related. Evidently, there is a sensor for the ABS in or around the wheel bearing? He thinks there is a definite wheel bearing problem.
Steering noice - his initial thoughts is that there is air in the system.
Tie Rod Recall - will be fixed
Chassis creeking - they knew about the chassis problems and fixes. So they are going to look at it and determine what needs to be done.
I sure hope I get this thing back and have confidence in it going forward. I really like this ride, but I am really concerned about how it is going to hold up from problems that i have experienced and from what I have read on this site? I will reply with post service findings, when I get it back.

Re: ABS/DTCS Major problem? (alj)

Well, the good news is that the ABS/DTCS was ok. They were wacked due to the bad rear wheel bearings and power steering problem was due to a loose hose clamp (we will see?).
So wheel bearings replaced, tightened hose clamp, and tie rod recall 157 all fixed. They could not duplicate the creeky chassis problem. Hmmmm, I will take it in the winter as it is way more noticable. I am happy with the service and repairs for now.

Re: ABS/DTCS Major problem? (alj)

So in Toronto today and twice the DSTC activated while on slow turns with some rain. Thought nothing of it.
and then
ABS not working and brake assist service required messages came on. ABS light also came on. They stayed on and after reaching destination after 10 mins, I tried turning the car off/on. No luck.
Came out one hour later, turn it on and now the other two messages gone but anti skid service required message on alongwith the ABS light.
Some more turning on/off and now no messages.
Don't feel good about the 5 hour trip back tomorrow.
FYI: Took the service manager out on a drive past week and appointment pending because I think the bearings are out. Sounds awfully like the 2003 did except that was at 40k and am at 20k right now
Any ideas?

Re: ABS/DTCS Major problem? (obiwan)

update:
Another bearing bad and replaced.
Middle row center and outboard seats replaced for a racket that they were making that would not and could not go away. and I mean awful sound. Peace and quiet now.
AND now for the dstc:
error codes were 36001-2 59351-3 59358-3 (do these sound right?)
Bottom line, they were reset, the errors were from the brake control module but could not be traced. They removed hubs, checked sensors, removed steering wheel to check sensor/conntection etc etc.
So far so good

Re: ABS/DTCS Major problem? (alj)

Well, we had our first good snow of the year, 12" or so. So I got up early, like a little kid, to get the XC-90 out for a drive and it felt like it drove much better in the deep snow up my steep driveway then the two previous winters?
So now I am wondering if the the bad wheel bearing that was fixed a few months ago, could have been effecting the DTCS since day one and was messing up my winter/DTCS traction all long?
Last winter, before the wheel bearing repair, I was running snow tires and it did reasonably well in snow up my driveway, still not as good as my old Subaru Outback. Also, in deep snow, I had to turn off the DTCS as it would go off like crazy, if it detected slipping, shutting down the car's momentum.
This year, after the wheel bearing repair, with fairly new Toyo Open Country AT tires (not snow tires), the car performed great in 12 " of pow, hmmmmm? Also, the DTCS barely fired and when it did it did not kill my momentum. It might have even went up the hill as good as my old outback!
I know I have shared this before, but I really like the Toyo Open Country tires. They are not the best high milage, quite, highway tire, but if you drive off the beaten path and in mountian terrain, I would strongly consider them as a replacement tire. At this point, I am going to use them year round as I no longer think I need snow tires. Also, I get a lot of compliments on how they toughen up the XC-90 urban SUV look.
I look forward to the next few storms to do some further testing of the all wheel drive system and Toyos.

Hi,
I have the same problem in my new 2006 Xc90 V8. It had about 3000 KM when ABS light was on, and when i took it to dealer they tried reprograming but it did not work and they said it might be a wiring problem ! and they asked me to leave the car to be fixed. i will drop it by tommorow and will let you know if the this ABS/Anti skid message/problem is solved.
Bye

Great!! Sounds like the dealer is taking care of the car. Either the part is one that fails all if the time, or
vary rare. I suspect it is rare to have it fail so they dont have one in stock.

I had the car last night.
Dealer explained that ABS module has two parts one is sensor (replaced), the other part is OK. However, the other part is ordered from Volvo and will be replaced if problems occurs again or when I bring it back to 10000 KM Service, because maintenance procedure calls for that.
Anyway, the car is OK for now.
