So, as some of you know, I'm unhappy with the headlight XPEL tint on my R, along with my window tint which I've wanted to make darker. I was going to go ahead and get those things figured out this summer, but plans have changed a little sooner than expected.
As I was on the way to the tint shop to discuss a custom cutout for my headlights, the local PD decided to pull me over and give me 5 days to take ALL of the tint off my car...all windows, front and back, both headlights and taillights. I negotiated, saying I'm getting killed for time on my internship, so he ended up giving in and giving me an extension to get it done within 2 weeks. I asked what would happen if I couldn't get it done within the 2 weeks, and the officer told me I would be issued a citation AND be told to take all the tint off anyway. Sounds like it's time to de-tint the R.
So, here's the plan...
Next Monday, bright and early, going down to get all of my tint removed. Quote is 3+ hours and $120.
After my car gets tint-neutered, I'm taking it over to the precinct to have the visual inspection completed, which shouldn't take more than a few minutes. I've had it before when my registration was late one year.
After the police are satisfied, I'm going back to the tint shop, and re-tinting as follows: Doing the tails exactly the same as before, hopefully the edges will come out a little better now that the guy has done them once (he considered them one of the most challenging he's ever done). Along with that, going with a nice 15% window tint all around. Quote is about 2 hours total, $180 for all the windows, $80 for the tails.
As for the headlights with custom cutout, I'm going to let that go until the summer when I can better afford it.
Work is being done by Shades of Gray.
So, the only thing I'm unhappy about is having to mess with the tails, since I was 100% happy with them. Anyone in the area want to try out tinted tails for a few days while I swap for yours?

Soooo, you're going to neuter it, have it redone correctly, and then probably have a citation issued because they know your car?
Why did he demand ALL the tint comes off? I can understand the lights, but why the windows?

1st of all ONLY a State Police officer can make you "take it off"
Second, the law is 35% in PA.
I've never even been looked at much less stopped for tint! A local yocal cannot do what he did.

You can take all the tint off of your windows for free it comes off very
easily, just get a razor peel one small corner back and peel the rest off by hand nice and easy! save $120 and 3 hours labor. DIY! By the way 3 hours my a$$ 20 minutes and all gone, use a little goo gone if you are having a problem with the headlights and tails.

Re: (crimnlmnded)

sorry to hear it mentos. better to keep it legal anyway IMO lol. your car was way blacked out man, suprised it didnt happen sooner.
it all depends how long the tint has been on in regards to removal. if its been on for years....let the shop do it. under a year, it will most likely come right off as described.
either way, sorry to hear it. F tha police.

"f tha police" who gave you a two week break instead of 5 days. nice
Sounds like it was a good reason to get the retint the way you wanted it. It's also a fix it ticket w/ no fine as long as its corrected.
Maybe you can take the tail light tint off and reapply when you choose. I don't know if I'd recommend you replacing it asap. What if the same Officer see's your car again with the same tint. No extensions will be given for sure. DOH!
I had tinted head light covers for my previous car I only used during the day time and for car shows and stuff. Never traveled at night with them.

Re: (SJ04V70R_NV)

I love the blacked out tails, particularly on a black car...but there's no way I'd do it. Not in MA. It's just giving them an excuse to bust your seeds.

You can peel the tint off, it is just laminate stuck to the glass. Once it is peeled off, spray the windows with windex and then scrape it with a razor blade. It will take some time to get it all off, but it will save you a lot of money. I have taken tint out of an entire SUV before and it sucks.

I've enjoyed my tint so much that even if I got a ticket every year for the next decade, I'd turn right around and get it tinted the next day. Same with my tail lights. It's not that I don't care about the law or paying out of pocket, I just know what I want and what I like.
Anyway, the tint was applied by, how should I say, non-professionals, and the rear windscreen I'm worried about with regard to the defroster, etc. The shop quoted me for pretty much just the rear windscreen, and said that headlights, tail lights, and the rest of the windows wouldn't change the price, so I told them to go ahead and do it all anyway.
EDIT: It's worth mentioning that the cop did use the phrase "snafu".

I thoguht IL was bad with their "no tint on front windows", but it really sucks not being able to tint anything on a sedan. I got 35% on front and so far never got pulled over.

You can do the side windows yourself with a razor blade and patience.
I would not try to do the rear window, too much fussing around with defroster lines.
A lot of times the tint shop will give you a discount if you go back to get it redone, ask them!
