So, as some of you know, I'm unhappy with the headlight XPEL tint on my R, along with my window tint which I've wanted to make darker. I was going to go ahead and get those things figured out this summer, but plans have changed a little sooner than expected.
As I was on the way to the tint shop to discuss a custom cutout for my headlights, the local PD decided to pull me over and give me 5 days to take ALL of the tint off my car...all windows, front and back, both headlights and taillights. I negotiated, saying I'm getting killed for time on my internship, so he ended up giving in and giving me an extension to get it done within 2 weeks. I asked what would happen if I couldn't get it done within the 2 weeks, and the officer told me I would be issued a citation AND be told to take all the tint off anyway. Sounds like it's time to de-tint the R.
So, here's the plan...
Next Monday, bright and early, going down to get all of my tint removed. Quote is 3+ hours and $120.
After my car gets tint-neutered, I'm taking it over to the precinct to have the visual inspection completed, which shouldn't take more than a few minutes. I've had it before when my registration was late one year.
After the police are satisfied, I'm going back to the tint shop, and re-tinting as follows: Doing the tails exactly the same as before, hopefully the edges will come out a little better now that the guy has done them once (he considered them one of the most challenging he's ever done). Along with that, going with a nice 15% window tint all around. Quote is about 2 hours total, $180 for all the windows, $80 for the tails.
As for the headlights with custom cutout, I'm going to let that go until the summer when I can better afford it.
Work is being done by Shades of Gray.
So, the only thing I'm unhappy about is having to mess with the tails, since I was 100% happy with them. Anyone in the area want to try out tinted tails for a few days while I swap for yours?
