A clean, exciting race with the pole sitter, Sam Hornish, the winner, (a rare deal in itself), over 19 year old Marco Andretti by about a car length in a front straight draft pass after turn 4!
The girl finished 8th
JRL

Re: A good Indy 500 (JRL)

It's always fascinating how in the last 30 laps, anything can happen, and how crew chiefs bet on what might happen. Danica was positioned to win or come in second IF there had not been a caution right at the end, but there was. Marco didn't set a tire wrong the entire race -- an amazing performance for a rookie of any age, let alone 19 years old. Five laps out, Michael Andretti had a shot at it, but simply didn't have enough car under him and got passed by his own son (what goes through your head at a time like that?)... Hornish overcame all sorts of difficulties to position himself to win in the last two seconds, and deserves everything he gets for that.
It's a crap shoot, but a darned exciting one.

Re: A good Indy 500 (Phil Singher)

I listened to the race as I always have since I was 5 years old. The Indy 500 is always blacked out locally here. I will watch it on the replay at 8pm tonight. It was very exciting. The 2nd closest race in history since the '92 race when little Al won. This was also the only time in the race's 90 year history that the winner was not leading on lap 199.
This is also the second memorial day (Indy 500) weekend that I've got a new volvo. On the Friday before Memorial Day 2001 I got my C70 coupe. Now in 2006 I got the S60R. Nice tradition.

Why would it be blacked out?
Stands were almost filled, but you say even when they were 100% filled it still was blacked out?
You should be ashamed of yourself, living in Indy and not going to the 500 I've been there three times in my life (when it was REALLY good)

Re: A good Indy 500 (JRL)

Why should I be ashamed? I've been plenty of times to the Indy 500. I went every year from 1983-1989 and then from 1991-93. Haven't been since. I think I've got my wife interested and we'll probably go next year. Hey, maybe we could organize a swedespeed get together for next year?
The blackout rule has always been in effect ever since I've been alive. It's a stupid rule that the Hulman-George family has had since they've owned the Speedway. It's actually kind of cool because you really appreciate it when you're listening to it on the radio your imagination can go wild. Now I'm watching it on the tv and it reaffirms what you pictured in your mind when you heard it live.

You weren't clear, the 80's had some good races
Quite a spectacle isn't it? However, I've tried to listen to races on the radio and it doesn't quite cut it for me.
