A/C - a little on the lite side

Today our temps were in the high 90's (northeast)and very humid. This is really the first time I've had the air conditioning working at full throttle.

It just seems that the air is just barley blowing cold. Has anyone else experienced the same problem or is this normal? I was the only passenger and would think that the car wouldn't be too comfortable if I had a full load of passengers.

True, the last few days have been brutal with today being the worse as temps (in the Philadelphia area) hovered between 97 and 98 degrees. At some point (around 1pm) my car's ambient temp gauge read 101 degrees!

You must not be in manual mode for maximum cooling effect. Set the temperature at 64 (when you get in the very hot car) and push the AUTO feature on the vent selection. That will set the fan at a very high speed. Lower your front windows for about 45 seconds or so (to blow most of the interior's hot air outside) and then after you close the windows push the recirculation button. I bet you in about 2 minutes or so, you will feel the difference. Let the automatic climate control do the work. As the interior cools off, gradually, start bringing the thermostat settings up from 64 to 68, to 70 and deactivate the recirc button, too!. The fan speed will start subsiding on its own and you will have a "perfect" interior temperature. I did not have any problems with my car and I have the Graphite Leather interior as well (we are at a slight disadvantage over those who have light interiors).

Its been in the 90's here in Vancouver the last few days and a few times last week. The air conditioning is keeping up quite well and it gets cold pretty quick.

By the way, I have it in auto and I do use recirculate at the beginning.

I never thought of using the recirculate button. I usually do leave the window cracked open for a little bit to give the car a chance to vent off some that very hot air. And to tell you the truth, I'm surprised that the graphite leather doesn't hold as much heat as I though it would on these hot days.

your car is probably still under warranty so you might want to ask the dealer to check the a/c refridgerant level for you.

I 'd be totally surprised if there was anything wrong with the refrigerant level of a 2002 model.

I have a few questions about A/C that I've always wanted to know the answers.

Does turning up the fan to a faster speed waste more gas and therefore reduces performance more? You're pumping more A/C cold air in and using the engine and gas more for the A/C if the fan is on max?

The AUTO and MANUAL LEDS on the A/C button don't really mean auto or manual. AUTO is filtrated outside air and manual is recirculation. Why are they called auto and manual? And according to
GrecianVolvo, one should turn off the recirc button once the A/C gets going. Why not use recirc (manual) or outside air (auto) when it gets going?
