Hello. I feel like a stupid idiot, but I don't know how to tell if my wagon is a turbo. I think it is, because there's a lot more piping than I'd think I'd be seeing with a NA engine and I'm pretty sure the turbo is sitting behind an aluminum plate between the engine and the firewall. The only thing that makes me doubt it is many of the cars I looked at before buying it would say "TURBO" on the carfax report and mine doesn't come up with that. Any ideas?
Hell I might as well throw in another question. The IPD ECU upgrade for this car doesn't bring the boost as high on the turbo (assuming mine is one) as it would with an R wagon of the same year. Aside from small differences, does the R just have a bigger / stronger turbo or what?

Re: '99 V70 XC Turbo Questions (stupididiot)

Not stupid questions at all. You're right, that is where the turbo is, between the motor and the firewall, behind a heat shield. There should also be the large black plastic inlet pipe going over the motor. Carfax is not exactly the reliable source of information their advertisements would lead you to believe, IMHO.
All XC's have the low pressure turbo motor vs. the R's which have a high pressure turbo motor, which accounts for why the R's have higher potential output with a chip. The high pressure turbo motors also have different internals and slightly less displacement.

Re: '99 V70 XC Turbo Questions (Wayne T5)

Thanks. Yeah, I was wondering if it was just a different turbo or different internals, and you got that, too. I won't even be able to afford the ECU / Exhaust for a while anyhow, and I'm already thinking beyond that

You could focus on some suspension upgrades first such as Sway Bars, better endlinks, strut brace etc. These things when combined make a huge difference in the driveablility of the car...much more fun.

Re: '99 V70 XC Turbo Questions (Wayne T5)

Is the low pressure unit and the high pressure unit basically the same unit, just turning faster or is it a totally different turbo/
What are the sounds/symptons of a worn turbo?
Thanks, T

They are totally different turbos. You can of course put the larger turbo into the LPT car. More info can be found I believe in some of the pinned topics or over on Volvospeed.
