When I drive the car for about 15 minutes I start getting a metallic clattering noise from the transmission area that comes and goes at random and corresponds to the speed of the car (as opposed to engine speed). I'm wondering if this is the infamous bevel gear problem. The previous owner put different tires on the front and rear of the car, and I knew I needed to rectify that but I've only put a couple hundred miles on it since I bought it and I was hoping that could wait until I solved the other problems like the persistent P0172/EFI-231.

If I install a new set of tires will this go away, or do I absolutely need to replace the bevel/angle gear now?

Start with the known problems. Get matching tires and go from there.
