Hi I am trying to change the fuel pump on my wagon I have all wheel drive so there is alot involved in getting to the pump
http://www.matthewsvolvosite.c...92096
in this thread this guy cut an accesses hole inside the car. I know that the pump is located on the passenger side towards the front of the tank. but I cant tell from this guys photos where exactly he cut the hole and I dont want to make it larger then what it needs to be. Can someone give me a better idea of where I should cut the hole perhaps from a diagram or a picture of their trunk with a x marking the spot, or just tell me by what some input would help. thanks.

Re: 98 v70xc fuel pump location (JRL)

yes I realize that and that is not what I am asking I want to know where inside my car should I cut a hole so that I don't have to drop the fuel tank. I provided a link of someone else on another forum carrying out this procedure but I cant tell from his pictures where he actually cut the hole so that the fuel pump will be right there and I can just unbolt it and take it out of the fuel tank. I know the fuel pump is on the passenger side towards the front of the pump but I would like to know if someone could more precisely give me a location, perhaps from the service manual or a picture of a v70 trunk with a mark on the picture where I should cut or just by looking at the other posters picture that I have linked to maybe someone could tell where he cut his hole.

DYI = DIY
Is that a misspelling, a Spoonerism, dyslexia, or Yoda-speak?
 Oh, never mind...
Re: 98 v70xc fuel pump location (llama_of_doom)

Your screwed bro!! Take it from me who just replaced mine on my 99' XC. I tried everything, and yes even stupidly debated cutting access panel's. Never gonna happen bro!!! The tank has a transfer pump, so it's like two fuel pumps. The part alone from volvo is $700.00 bucks. The driveshaft, exhaust and rear suspension all need to be removed in order to remove the fuel tank, then remove the pumps from the top of the tank. The main fuel pump is on the passenger side top and the transfer pump is on the drivers side tank top. Removing the rear seat and cutting multiple holes would surley damage other components on the car!!!!! There's all kinds of electrical wires, evap tubes and fuel pump related hardware strapped to the chassis above the tank. You're asking for trouble, believe me. Start saving and I wish you the very best dude... I feel your pain from here

Re: 98 v70xc fuel pump location (ljjones)

thanks alot this diagram is a big help to me. Is there by any chance a picture of the entire car with the fuel tank in the picture or something like that. That picture of the fuel tank is probably good enough but I would really like it if someone could tell me for sure the fuel pump is located right beneath ___ cut there. I am thinking its under the rear seats based on how far up it looks like it is in that picture but of course I need to get under the car and look and feel around.
I really wish this guy had a wider shot of his work but can anyone tell me where this hole is in his trunk?

Re: 98 v70xc fuel pump location (llama_of_doom)

Based on the angle of the pump and the position of the front of the tank, that shot looks like it was taken from inside the passenger compartment. That would put the cut-out under the rear seat (or seat back) in a sedan. I'm not sure if it would be exactly the same place in the wagon.
I'll look through Vadis some more for a wider view. The crawl-under-car-and-feel-around method may be best. If you can find that torque tube bolt (center front of fuel tank, beside the driveshaft in first drawing) you're close -- just follow the front edge of the tank toward the passenger side...

I couldn't find a drawing showing the fuel tank location, but here's a small one showing the general location of that torque tube bolt you'll be looking for at the front edge of the tank. The part location is that tiny drawing at the top of the page. It probably doesn't give you any new information -- just where to poke around from under the car.
Note: the torque tube drawings are from a 3/4 rear view, while the previous fuel tank drawings are from a 3/4 front perspective.

The OBD2 port is located under the armrest between the front seats. Just open the armrest and you'll see a grey cover marked OBD.

Re: 98 v70xc fuel pump location (Wayne T5)

You're not screwed!!!
Just made the access panel 2-days ago. On a 1998 Volvo XC the panel was cut around the passenger seat bottom right hinge. You will need to reattach it robustly as it will be used to support the seat bottom when it is "folded up." Makes it a snap to access the fuel pump!!!!! Use a Dremel tool to cut the metal. I went through 4 cutting wheels but I was able to be precise and not cut through anything other than the metal. A die grinder would be problematic.

Re: 98 v70xc fuel pump location (lookforjoe)

It's not a butcher job if you know the slightest bit about fabrication. In fact.... I'd welcome it if someone did this before me. Would have made is a lot more simple. Anyone want emails of the images you're more than welcome. Or.... go drop $1,000 in labor costs/drop the rear end and driveline yourself. I'd rather risk a small piece of sheet metal failing at 70 mph than the rear end coming apart when my wife and children are in the car. I'd post the images here but am not quite sure how to.
Hi Snipercat,
I just wanted to clarify cutting a panel above the fuel pump for access purposes. Is this a wagon with awd you cut a hole in. Aircraft builders put them in as a matter of course for routine maintenance. Too bad volvo doesn't do the same. Thanks for any info or pics. mtipcc, gmail

After my previous remarks....

I ended up cutting the floor (very carefully) for easy access. You can do the job without dropping the suspension, but it is much easier this way. I don't like silicone & sheet metal screw attachments, so mine has a hinge at the top, and a lip at the bottom (not shown)

This is the exact size needed. Be VERY CAREFUL cutting as the fuel lines are directly beneath the sheet metal

dynamat (butyl) on the outside to water seal the panel
