Hi everyone. My first post in this forum.
I just want to ask you all volvo enthusiasts your opinion on a 1996 440 2.0SE as a second hand car. It has done over 120000km and paintwork is quite a bit scratched and lots of squeeking and other small sounds. How would you rate this car? About what price do you think a car like this should be sold at? (give me your suggestion in your country's currency with the price of a new BMW 318i so i can compare). Cheers, thanks guys!!

Re: 96 440 2.0?? (smg2)

Any of you European guys have experience with this vehicle?
Welcome to Swedespeed by the way. I'm sorry, you may find our 400 series forum a bit quiet, but the forums are growing.

The 400 series is not as good as the bigger Volvo's... (they are made in Holland) but they are still good. I would only buy it with full service history.
It's one of the later models so they should have fixed the most bugs.
They drive very well...
Price, I don't have a clue
I drive a '87 480 ES
Good luck with your decision

Re: 96 440 2.0?? (BenES)

I read that the 440 is only just over 1000kg kerb weight...how about bigger models like 850? I feel that 1000kg is way too light for a Volvo for now a Honda Jazz (a very small car) is about the same weight as teh volvo!! Is this 440 as safe as other Volvos? i mean volvos shoudl be very safe shoudln't they?

Re: 96 440 2.0?? (smg2)

and now i have driven it quite a few times...i experienced a lot of unknown noises... seems like suspension or steering, just continously making a noise... and i have to say build quality is not good, trims are not well placed, and when the car bumps only a little, some plastic between the front doors and the front panel contacts and makes noises too....and the centre console when going over bumps shakes too. Is this just the 400series or is it the same with the higher models like 850?

I'd say it must be mainly the 400 series (although I have never been in one let alone driven one), the 850s are really solid cars with above average fit/finish. (I do have 850 experience ) My 850 was made in Belgium and I know from a couple of fender benders it is very safe from what I have put the trusty girl through. It seems to carry the safety mark from the 740/940 series cars in design.
I have no idea what the price difference would be though? Early 850s seem to be modest in price and are nearly identical to latest 850 versions. I would recommend a '94 850 as it had improvement over the '93 (or earlier?) cars.
