Hello all, I just got a 93 850 GLT (got a really good deal on it) and it has some tranny problems (which I knew of before I bought it). I really like this car so i'm willing to spend some money on it to make it right. The "issues" that the tranny is having is that it will do nothing when I put it in reverse. I can drive it foward all day long with no problems. I was told at the dealer that it could possably be something electronic on the transmission (he told me that there is a lot on that transmission that is electronically controlled by some computer). He also told me it would be $2,000 for a new tranny and about $1,000 for the labor. I kind of figured it would be that much anyways before I bought the car. What I would like to know is it possable that, after I changed the trans fluid, it would be ok? Or is the transmission fowled up beyond all belief? I am very new to this site (this is my first posting) so any of your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again!!

Re: 93 850 "Issues" (jlosness)

Could be a lot of things but the PIP (about $300+) switch controls the gear shifting
(Not sure if it has anything to do with reverse though, first time I ever heard of this one)

Sell it, scrap it whatever. Save your money and get into a 95-97 if you can.

Otherwise, sounds like something catstrophic with the transmission. You should be able to find used ones for 500-1000... but if you really like your 93 (keep in mind 3000 dollars now invested will have surpassed the resale value of the car) then you might as well just bite the bullet and have it done.

It's called a PNP switch (or inhibitor switch) pretty cheap in the US of A on Ebay, FCP or other parts peoples, genuine Volvo ones or even generic ones by Scan Tech will do the job at nothing like the price mentioned, info on how to instal it is on Ozbricks or Bay 13 etc. took me about 2hrs all told to do mine and I'm a mug mechanic, it fixed all my g/box probs. A flush of the ATF would probably do wonders as well.
