I just got done driving my 91 volvo 240 from Central Florida to West Texas... At an Alabama Gas station I attempted to open the hood by pulling the latch and the cable snapped off so now the handle just hangs loose and the hood can't be opened.. I ran inside and bought a pair of needle nose pliers and tried to pull it out to pop the hood (the first time I was successfull, I haven't been since) and it's leaking a bit of oil and is ready for an oil change..
I've heard everything from getting it from underneath to busting my grill (which I objected to)
anyone had a similar problem or can offer advice to get this hood up so I can check the oil and tranny fluid?
Re: [91-240] getting hood up w/ broken latch? (obdh)

got the hood up, but it was a pain in the ass... I crawled underneath the front and managed to slide my hand up to where the cable was mounted underneath and flipped the latch... I tried for about 30min then crawled out and was messing with something else and pushed on the hood and it was opened...
is it easy to just replace the whole cable? it's missing a few inches

do you know offhand what size the oil drain plug bolt is... All my tools got stolen so until I can buy more next week I need to just buy one, the right one!

I did end up getting a crescent wrench in the end... more useful than a big one size $15 wrench

Yeah, I managed to not bust my knuckles while removing the oil drain plug, but while putting the oil filter on (as usual) I scratched my hands all to hell.... guess that exhaust manifold has some sharp edges somewhere I can't see

Mechanix (sp?) makes some wonderful gloves that prevent this, but they are a bit pricey, something 25 bucks, but think about how much pain they will save you from. anyway, fix the hood!

Re: (Camyman)

The typical use of a box wrench prevents cuts and scrapes etc. Fit alls are grate but hard on the hands.
I am still kickin around tryin to remember what size that bloody bolt is....( on the oil pan) I had SAE Volvo's in the past. My 850 is my first metric Volvo.

Leave the grille out, and you can open the hood easily. BTDT.
Drain plug is 25mm. IPD magnetic is 1" (=25.4mm). Oil temp sender drain plug is 22mm.
