I'm thinking it would be really nice to be able to tow a rig like this with my 94 850 nonturbo.

I work at a vintage scooter shop so I haul a lot of scoots around town and to rallies and such, and the shop truck is a beast on gas, and well, I rather like smooth suspension and airconditioned leather interiors.
the trailer itsself is pretty light, and the scooters are about 250 lbs each. trailer would maybe 700 pounds or so tops.
is towing a trailer with a fwd volvo a terrible idea? is there a hitch i can install that won't require cutting the rear bumper cover? will it cause too much strain on my (automatic) transmission?

Re: 850 wagon + small trailer. doable? advisable? (yeahyeahyeah)

I just put a hitch on my 97 non-turbo wagon and pulled a 5x8 Uhaul trailer probably weighing 2000 lbs for about 300 miles with no problems. I got the class 2 hitch from IPD and it was a breeze to install; it just bolts right up. The wiring is harder. If you get the wiring kit from IPD you still have to run a wire all the way from the battery to the rear bumper, then tap into the lights in the back. So it took me about 15 minutes to bolt on the hitch and then about 4 hours to do the wiring.
The IPD hitch is rated for 3000 lbs I think so the the small trailer that you want to pull should be no problem. As for driving, the manual says to leave the auto transmission in "3" when pulling a trailer, which I did. This means that you will be using higher rpms but that is not a big deal. I was getting 20 mpg pulling the trailer, which is not bad.
Uhaul will also install a hitch for you. I haven't had any experience with their work. The Volvo hitch is nice but pricey and harder to install. I would say that if you are pulling less than 2000 lbs the IPD hitch should be fine.
Given the weight of the cargo I would opt for a slight heavier and more stable trailer.
One wrong move and that tiny trailer will flip over..

You're car will be able to tow that much weight just fine.
